Flagship statement from Susan Atkins' website

 From Alisa Statman:

The Susan Atkins website (susanatkins.org) was recently brought to my attention and I am absolutely outraged by their flagship statement on the opening page:
“[Susan] has all of these things she’s done, all these committees, all these organizations, all these degrees. And I am 60 years old and I don’t know of anybody who has done all these things.” (Jay Sebring’s Sister, 2005)
This is a complete and knowingly gross mis-representation of a victim’s impact statement. What Jay’s sister actually said is what we put in Restless Souls:
“She’s got all these things she’s done, all these committees, all these organizations, all these degrees, but the bottom line is, she’s just as much a murderer today as she was thirty-six years ago because my brother is just as dead as he was thirty-six years ago.”
I would not dare to judge someone’s religious beliefs or integrity of truthfulness, but when a born-again-Christian outright lies on their cover page by mis-quoting one of their victims next of kin—right next to sub-topics such as “Bible Studies” and “Restitution Project”—I felt the mis-quote needed to be addressed in an equally public forum.

I realize that Atkins is long gone and that this website is run by her “estate” i.e. James Whitehouse, but it serves as Atkins’ representation (much like Whitehouse representing her at parole hearings) and it’s done in her memory. And, if she were still alive and having parole hearings I think Jay Sebring’s family would be justified in bringing it up in their impact statement to question her remorse, and therefor rehabilitation.

she's dead and was an awful person. let it go.

It's an awful, petty and unethical thing to do, and a way of sticking the proverbial knife in one more time to the victims and their families. If whomever administers that website truly believes in Atkins, then let her accomplishments behind bars stand on their own. Don't misrepresent and distort something like a victim impact statement in a vain attempt to try and make her look better.

Leigh said...

And while Atkins is now dead, Jay's sister is not and I very much doubt she wants to have a distorted version of her words appearing on a website that supports one of her brother's murderers.

wengr said...

I have read those statements on the Atkins site and always thought them odd. Thanks for the information.

one of my pet peeves is people who tell others, especially others they do not know, to "let it go". Run your own life daniel. Alisa has every right to be upset by this distortion, which is an abomination in my mind. Whitehouse should be held accountable.

Matt said...

daniel, the issue isn't how horrible a person Susan may have been. The issue is a deliberate misrepresentation of words from a victim's family member's parole impact statement.

I would love to hear JW's reasons for this apparent word twisting. Splain Lucy, splain!

I have nothing really to add other than Susan was still pretty bangable when that photo was taken.

It would be interesting indeed to hear why Margaret DiMaria's words were (ahem) paraphrased. Given how affected victims's family members still seem crushed to this day when they appear at hearings, I doubt she meant them in this context.

Good to see you again, adam. You have always been able to rouse a laugh out of me!

Quite frankly- I have gotten myself in trouble on a few sites for having the gaul to question those who go beyond a certain point in support of the criminals of TLB.

James Whitehouse is an unbelievable example of the lengths some would go. Here is a guy who lived in a trailer, had very little resources and somehow put himself through Harvard Law School all in the name of Helping Susan Atkins... He literally dedicated his life to her cause. Like the others who have done this- he is realizing it was all for naught. Well- he did get a law degree....

Can you imagine what motivation and focus like that could be used on if the guy had directed his energy in a more productive direction???

Why do smart people like this do these things? Barbara B- Kristin Watson- James Whitehouse-

I guess some people dont agree with me on this subject and some people have personally invested time and emotions on these people

But I guess my final comment on this subject which seems to keep alienating me is this...

If it is o.k. for these guys to meet, fall in love, and dedicate their lives to those who have killed and harmed others...

It is going to have to be o.k. for me to say they are twisted and sick for doing so. It is not in good taste to befriend known killers and it is not a good reflection of you and what is inside of you if you chose to champion causes like this. When you start to go as far as twisting the truth to further a cause which already turns some stomachs- you really are putting yourself out there in the public eye and the scrutiny of the good innocent people involved you are offending.

This, of course, is just my opinion and as always feel free to tell me how stupid and wrong I am for having it lol

Happy New Year!! Be Safe :)

ST, James credits Susan with turning his life around through their correspondences. He has said that her words and support saved his life from a world of drugs.

James Whitehouse is a douchebag. That is incredibly immoral and disgusting.

Hey ST. To he'll with what anyone else says we're all entitled to our own opinion. I think you made some valid points in your comments that you've come under fire for.

Yes, ST you have made valid points. Not the least of which is WHERE they fell in love. They MAY have been looking for it when they entered the prison.

Me? I preferred places like the supermarket and college football games. But that's just me :)

I stay away from the killers' sites unless I need to access them for research purposes, but I went on Susan's for the first time in a long time since this post appeared, and let's just say that the quote Alisa's highlighted is not the only questionable thing posted. Love the (not so) thinly veiled "Rewards and Finders' Fees" section. Why is he highlighting the victims' drug use there? Lots of people did drugs back then. Does it lessen the extreme violence and brutality that was done to them? Answer: Hell no. Way to memorialize your wife and her good works, sir!

If love can't redeem you, then what can? I don't think these people are abnormal, I think they are simply human. Patty is with the Colonel on this one, you do not choose who to love. It just happens.

I move that on the 2013 Manson Bus Tour that there be a Symposium on Love where we have one of those debate formats with the ProLove Anywhere forces doing battle with the Bullshit Killer Love proponents.
Wouldn't you love to see the Col and Patty in a respectful debate with the Saint and Alisa for example.
Of course I am kidding.
But rumor has it that Charlie is wearing a wedding ring in his latest photo on Manson Direct. Anyone got info???

Suze said...

He finally married Bubba? Must have been part of the deal for Bubba lopping off Schreck's ear. LMAO!!!

ST. Circumstance said...

I am not in any way anti love, nor do I doubt in any way that the feelings these people had and/or have are legitimate and real.

All I have questioned and What nobody seems to ever directly answer is the appeal of getting involved with a convicted killer??

I dont understand why nobody addresses the issue I raise instead of my addressing it...

You turn on the news or read an article about someone who is locked away forever for murder. EVERYTHING YOU DO BETWEEN THAT MOMENT AND THE TIME WHEN YOUR LEGITIMATE FEELINGS START TO FORM IS WHAT I QUESTION!!!

you dont just see someone on TV or in the paper one time and love them. Sorry :)

You have to get to know them and spend some time with them. I dont blame you for what you feel after you get to know someone.

WHY AND WHAT INSIDE OF YOU MAKES THE PERSON EVEN WORTH YOUR TIME? ALL YOU KNOW OF THEM IS WHAT THEY DID?? YOU HAVE TO TAKE A FIRST STEP. MAKE A CHOICE TO KNOW THEM BETTER. Maybe no choice about your feelings when they come- but certainly a choice to get involved in the first place.

WHY WITH A PERSON LIKE THIS?? you made the choice to take it further before you had a chance to know enough to love them...

Once it happened it happened. It is what it is and they are what they are.

not for me to fight with anyone about- it is just my opinion.

That makes me sickening lol

oh well... Ill be sick myself this time tomorrow morning...

we can all be sick together :)

Thanks Patty- the very best to you as well in the new year. I really have no problem when anyone disagrees with me. Its the name calling and personal attacks I can do without... I never killed anyone or stuck anyone who did in anyone elses face asking for compliments or praise. So why I get more venom than those who have is beyond me???

you have always had and will always have my respect...

End of the day 2013 will be like every other year when it comes to this stuff. we all know what we have said and done, and who we support and what side we are on. It is up to each of us to be able to live with ourselves and the choices we make. We all make our comments and as long as we can live with ourselves and feel we are doing the right thing by our own belief systems. At the end of the day we know how we treat each other and what kind of people we are in this world...

Even without the 5 joints and 14 beers I will have tonight :)

I will always sleep just fine

My first drink this afternoon lol is for all of you who can say the same

Saint, I was just fooling around. I honestly think the issue of women falling for killers just comes under the heading of there is no accounting for taste - everyone's got their own trip and who knows why someone falls for another. But I really do get your point. What kind of guy, for instance, would want to marry Monica Lewinsky? Imagine the ragging you'd have to take. And it's not like she was a porn star or something.
Of course I am the last person on earth that can judge another. I once took Oswald's daughter home to my Boston Irish Catholic JFK worshiping parents and introduced her as my fiance. That was a memorable scene.
I still like to imagine a guy being out on a Match.com date with Mary Brunner and over the soft candle light of the resturaunt he slowly makes out that X on her forehead and thinks...what the hell have I done.

ST. Circumstance said...

Leary my man I am not offended or insulted by anything you have said. It is a touchy subject...

You were the last person I have ever really insulted or went after with any animosity and between yourself and AC- I made the biggest fool of myself at any point of my involvement with these blogs.

I dont know if I ever told you that I am sorry for the way I acted, but I am.....

Happy New Year- and all the best :)

We may not be able to control who we are attracted to but we do have the choice to put the breaks on our emotions. Rarely does what we choose to do in life only affect ourselves, our choices also affect those around us, parents, children and close friends.

To me choosing to fall for a convicted killer and marrying them is one of the ultimate deadends life has to offer.

james whitehouse lives on a planet all of his own. he is a prison groupie. look up his former girlfriend veronica compton. she was the girlfriend of hillside strangler kenneth bianchi. she tried to commit a copycat murder to get bianchi released. very victim was stronger and overpowered compton. compton was released from prison a few years ago. she was whitehouses girlfriend before atkins. compton also was having an affair with lawrence merrick(hendrickson's partner while making "manson")when he was murdered. some think compton murdered merrick. really look her up she's as crazy as atkins. these are the women whitehouse likes to court.

daniel said...

@beauders no kidding? I didn't know about that. It's not shocking but it is interesting. More info please.

More on Veronica Compton:
"She went to jail and soon found herself being seduced by yet another serial killer. This time, it was Douglas Clark, one of the people responsible for the Sunset Strip Slayings. After he realized that Compton was in jail with his ex-girlfriend and former partner in crime, Carol Bundy (no relation to Ted), he set out to seduce her with flowery love letters... and valentines featuring drawings of a beheaded woman. The two passionately discussed their future plans to open a mortuary together in order to have access to dead bodies to bang, and he convinced her to testify in his trial that Carol had confessed to having done all the killings herself. Once again, Veronica totally failed under pressure and ended up pleading the 5th.

Here is a letter sent to Veronica from Doug after things went sour. If there's one thing we can all learn from this, it is that "Thanks for the sex" is a great closer.

She later escaped from prison at some point, but ended up going back and marrying an elderly professor who taught at the prison. Apparently she's out now and they have kids and she's a born-again. Shocking, I know."
The source is a blog post called "A Brief Analysis of Hybristophilia" which looks jnto the phenom of murder groupies.

Whitehouse also put on his stupid website stuff about Sharon Tate doing drugs. Did you see that? What does that have to do with his ugly, pickle-shaped-headed wife murdering? He needs to take all that stuff down off that website, then go to the nearest Fantastic Sam's, and get that stupid ponytail cut off. I think it is interfering with his brains!!!

daniel said...

Who gives a crap if Sharon did drugs or didn't? I hate that talk. If she did, she certainly didn't harm anybody. I didn't read the website because I don't want to give him any traffic so I might be talking out of my rear.

Eh, I'm not trying start an arguement or be a dick, but the scene at Cielo wasn't exactly the best environment for a soon-to-be-mother. The danger that drugs pose to the individual user is one thing. But the tons of shady people that will eventually come into your world via the drug life is another. They had some real lowlifes partying at that house on a regular basis- even living there- and you know what? When you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas.

I just finished reading, "Child of Satan, Child of God: Susan Atkins" and it's pretty clear she fried her weak-ass brain early on in life. Its awesome she found god and who knows- it might have been a legit conversion. But still, it conversion from hardcore cult follower to hardcore Born Again Christian, yikes. I'm not sure which is worse ;-)

daniel said...

That's true but we have benefit of hindsight. I know I've had friends involved in things I didn't agree with (but still love) and I could never foresee anything like that happening to them or myself.

No argument started. I agree with you on the "company you keep" aspect. But you don't always know everything about everyone you keep company with. Nobody deserved what happened to them that night. I mean the victims.

adam said...

Has anybody read the timeline on that site? The photos for each year are pretty cool, each decade seems to show a different phase of Susan.
1960's/early 70's - Drugged out skank with a mustache.
1970's - Turns hot in a nun/Mortica Addams kind of way.
1980's - Still attractive but fell victim to bad 80's fashion and hairstyles.
1990's - MILF!
2000's - Turned into a greying granny.

Hey Saint, you and I are always good, my man. No worries. Your stuff always gets me thinkin, and I thank you for that.
Before love there has to be an attraction. So the nut of this discussion is why someone would be attracted to evil. Remember, Hitler not only had Eva Braun but a dozen others who were hopelessly smitten including a half dozen who killed themselves over him. And then there was the famous Unity Mitford.
We all know the infamous attraction to "bad boys" that girls in high school had. I know it is simplistic but maybe some or most outgrew that and few others moved on to the hard stuff - evil.
I, myself, suffer from a fatal attraction to gun molls from the forties. And Deadhead hippie gals from the seventies. Who can account for taste? We all have our own trip. And what a long strange trip it's been.

I hear ya man. I spent many nights at amphitheaters watching those barefoot girls dancing in the moonlight. I really miss the Dead.

Mid-eighties some time at a Dead show I was sitting in my seat when such a girl literally fell in my lap. No shoes, smelling of patchouli and feeling no pain...

Doc Sierra said...

That was the happiest time of my life. The barefoot girls story is true. I was tripping on acid at an AIDS benefit at the Oakland Coliseum sometime around 1988 or 1989 and John Fogherty opened for the Dead. Jerry and Bob were part of his backup band. When they played Green River and got to the part 'barefoot girls dancing in the moonlight' I looked around and there were beautiful barefoot girls everywhere, dancing in the moonlight.

fiona1933 said...

Lots of reasons ppl marry killers. The best might be a wish to understand the human inside the killer, to get a real perspective and then love growing through this search. Finding the 'real person' and bringing them to the fore, slaying the beast.

Or there is heavy psycho-sexual stuff...not just a brooding dark man on horseback type, but a man of real danger...a romantic novel with a dark heart. A man like Ted Bundy, therefore, is the ultimate man, the man who simply abducts you and has his wicked way...

Or there could be the Myra Hindley thing: a woman of darkness herself meets the soul-mate and they make each other worse.

As for Susan, it's a bit different. She wasn't the killer, after all, she was a shallow, very very shallow (look at the vanity expressed in her photos) girl, very very needy, desperate to have someone love her, desperate to prove herself. Look how hard she acted: it was a good act, many thought she was a tough cookie
