Sassy Bottoms, or Sassy Deputy District Attorney?

The post that I brought you a few days ago concerning Bobby Beausoleil, and child porn has been bothering me ever since. First of all, I wanted to know why nobody had ever heard of these allegations, and why nothing, apparently ever came out of it. I was ONLY reporting what I read in Bobby's 2008 parole hearing transcripts. Let me reiterate that I am NOT the one who pulled this story out of the clear, blue sky. I read it, found interest in it, and decided to post it. Was Deputy District Attorney Patrick Sequeira being a naughty boy by grasping at straws, or was Beausoleil truly caught being a perv-creep? I have been wondering about this ever since reading the transcript. I am sure everyone else has too. Do you think the D.A. went a little bit overboard on bringing up his art, and the gallery? I do think the D.A. had a job to do, and that was to bring up as much dirt as he could on Mr. Beausoleil, so the board would find him unsuitable, but gee, bringing up his art? LAME! Of course, if the art had anything to do with kids, then that issue, in/and of itself is enough to make any board member want to beat the snot out of him, and send him back to his cell without supper, for the rest of his life.  At any rate, I found an old newspaper article from the San Luis Opisbo newspaper that mentioned it briefly. I really do not know what to think. Hey, I love to give people the benefit of the doubt, but........Well, read on, and let us know what you think:

Bobby Beausoleil arrested on Cuesta Grade

August 6, 1969

Routine police work sometimes leads to the capture of a fugitive. This was recorded in a small story two days later. It was early August 1969, a brutal heat wave was sweeping the region with Avila Beach baking at 110 degrees on Tuesday. The next morning CHP patrolman Joe Humphrey rolled up on a car parked on the shoulder of Highway 101, south of the Cuesta summit. A 21-year-old man was sleeping in the front seat of a Fiat station wagon. The occupant was described as a transient, and a check of the plates revealed the car had been stolen. The car’s owner, Gary Hinman, 34, had been murdered. The music teacher’s body had been found a week earlier on July 31, 1969, at his Topanga Canyon home. Officers said a blood stained knife was found in the victim’s station wagon and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies came to San Luis Obispo to collect the suspect, Robert Kenneth Beausoleil. The story would have likely ended here for the then Telegram-Tribune and most other news outlets. It was, after all, 1969 and drug deals sometimes went bad. They were only musicians on the fringe. No doubt sad for those involved, but not destined to be a huge story. Details would gradually emerge. Accounts vary and sometimes the same sources had multiple accounts.Suspect, Beausoleil had another musician friend, sometimes called Chuck Summers. Later there would be up to 17 documented names listed as Summers’ aliases. Chuck had been present for a time during the three-day period the victim Hinman was held captive.Beausoleil would later insist that the murder was the result of a drug deal gone bad. His story was that Hinman, the car’s owner, had sold Beausoleil 1,000 hits of mescaline that he in turn resold to a motorcycle gang. When the gang complained that the drug was bad, he went to get his money back. Hinman’s ear was cut in a fight and when the victim threatened to go to the police, Beausoleil stabbed Hinman twice in the chest.

Another version of the story, told at trial and in interviews with witnesses, said Chuck Summers had ordered Beausoleil and two women, Mary Brunner and Susan Atkins. to take a rumored $20,000 inheritance from Hinman. When the extortion attempt stalled, Chuck showed up with Bruce Davis in tow. Chuck and Hinman argued, Chuck pulled out a sword or bayonet and sliced Hinman’s ear off. He then left with Davis in one of Hinman’s cars. Chuck instructed the others not to let Hinman go until they had the money. What is not disputed is Beausoleil stabbed Hinman. After the stabbing, Beausoleil, Brunner and Atkins took turns holding a pillow over the victim’s face until he died.

In an attempt to throw police onto a false trail, “Political Piggy” was written in Hinman’s blood and the wall marked with a bloody paw print. They were trying to link the Black Panthers to the crime.

Chuck Summers increasingly espoused a philosophy of racial hatred and he had a loose collection of followers, sometimes called family. The family took their name from Chuck’s given surname, Manson.

When word got out that Beausoleil had been arrested, Charles Manson assembled his trusted followers. The plan was to free Beausoleil through a series of gruesome copycat murders. This would convince authorities the wrong man was in prison and could also incite a race war they called Helter Skelter.

On Aug. 8, 1969 the murder spree that would forever define the Manson Family began, with others to follow. Some remain unsolved to this day. The murders would be the focus of intense coverage.

Later Atkins would brag about the Tate-LaBianca murders while in jail for another charge, giving investigators an early window into the workings of the Family.

The Gary Hinman case would be the first known murder linked to the the Manson Family. Beausoleil’s first trial ended in a hung jury, but the second trial returned a conviction on April 21, 1970, and Beausoleil was given a death sentence. He was interviewed by Truman Capote while on Death Row at San Quentin.

Under a 1972 court ruling, the death penalty was overturned. Along with many other convicts, his sentence was changed to life in prison.

Beausoleil was stabbed by other prisoners April 15, 1982, and this was cited in reports as a turning point in his life. Bobby Beausoleil would later distance himself from Manson.

Parole hearings were a regular story in the Telegram-Tribune when Beausoleil became an inmate at CMC, within a few miles of where he was arrested. While in prison, he would get married and become involved in movie and music recording projects, including music for a film called “Lucifer Rising.”“I would give anything to someday be known as something other than a murderer, ” he said in the Dec. 13, 1984, story.

A year later, allegations of child pornography surfaced after CMC officials discovered drawings and stories Beausoleil had written about spanking and had planned to mail to his wife Barbara. She then lived in Arroyo Grande and published newsletters “Sassy Bottoms” and “Domestic Discipline Digest” according to a Dec. 3, 1986, story. A postal inspector later said the material was not categorized as child pornography.

Prison reports from the 1980s described the convict as intelligent and having a good prison record, but the specter of Charles Manson is in the room at every parole hearing. In a Dec. 10, 1987, story, he said, “I feel like every time I come to one of these hearings, I have Mr. Manson sitting next to me,” he said.“I despise what the man represents … If I had known about what the man was about then, I wouldn’t have associated with him.”Psychiatric reports at this hearing were mixed, giving both above and below average violence potential. When victim advocates protested that three Manson family members were in the same prison, transfers were made. Bruce Davis remains at CMC, while Charles “Tex” Watson and Bobby Beausoleil were transferred.

Don't know what to think either. That sort of allegation would screw up your chances out of being freed or even having a normal life if you were. That Bug file has had me thinking a lot differently about authorities in that era.

On a lighter note, given the recent posts on BB & VB I find this amusing!

Bobby's dad was a Milkman for the same company as Mr. Weisel:

From Bobby's interview with Oui Magazine:

Beausoleil was born in 1948, the eldest of a Catholic working class family from Santa Barbara. His father worked as a milkman for twenty years for Arden Farms before stepping up to a managerial position.

Maybe Vince Jr is Bobby's little brother!

I hope she was getting some satisfaction on the side because Bug sounds like he was a nightmare to live with.

Having no idea what BB did or did not do in the realm of child porn, to think that he worked angle to sell or scam some pervs is not much of a stretch for a guy in prison for restraining and killing a guy for money. What I find more interesting about it is his attitude about it at the hearing. Imo it is clear that BB should remain incarcerated.

Suze said...

Not that I think any of the Family should be released but it hardly seems fair that a DA can stray from issues related to rehabilitation and behavior.

If he did something illegal, charge him as his attorney says. It seems though that they can blame a prisoner for the AIDS epidemic if they so choose and not have to offer proof. Once they say it it's out there and can bias the parole board.

I have read every one of Bobbys Parole hearing Transcripts. I have also read every letter on his website and all of his replies. I have read a few pages of the beginning of his new book which is still not done or out. I have listened to hours of his music, and seen much of his art. As he is a killer and not dead yet- it should be in better taste to give an opinion of him versus Barbara....

Bobby is the smartest one in the group still locked up. Cockiest too. He is the most reasonable today of them all. He never tried to trade in who he was as a result of his incarceration in an attempt to get out. Never got any jailhouse religion. He stayed true to his belief system- which is far different from mine. He paid a price for that as well. Things like his art and some of the things he has said in interviews over the years give the boards some ammunition to say he is still into weird shit because they dont understand alternative forms of art, music, religion. Bobby also contradicts himself and paints a rebellious bad-ass flattering picture of his younger days when he is talking about himself to those outside the prison system. He paints a different picture at his hearings and make himself much more innocent and naive in those days. So even as of his most recent web site updates in the letters/email section he is representing himself differently to one or the other. I wont make this post too long listing examples- they are there for those interested and the transcripts and Bobby's site are available for all to make their own opinions.

I dont think he would hurt babies or anyone else if they let him out. Bobby had many things available to him in his times, but class and culture do not seem to have been provided by the milkman, Charlie, or anyone else. It is possible that he thought that he was dabbling in something erotic/alternative, and not pedophili-anything. He seems to me just a little too typical male/macho to fit that profile...

But Bobby and wife were (and he is) into some really different things. I cant say for sure what the hell is intentions were doing and naming art like that while trying to get out of the clink.

For sure he is treated much worse at his parole hearings then any of the others. his last hearing was the most unreal I have ever come across in all the years of reading them. They literally cut him off, spoke to him with much disdain and contempt and ended the hearing in the middle of his statement. It is amazing how they use some of this stuff to prejudge him. That is not fair. But he should get it by now that they are looking for any reason.

It is hard for me to feel badly for Bobby....

What is your point Austin Ann? Poor you you stumbled upon this? Fuck right off you incendiary person.

If Bobby Beausoleil or Barbara Beausoleil did anything to hurt children, the Col, a number one HATER of child perverts (ask Nelson who I hounded past his grave) will be all up in his shit and will make sure everyone knows. Did you know Austin Ann that Convicts hate child perverts too?

But this feels like something that you just pulled out of your large ass. It is mentioned in no other parole hearing. And the article you cite actually mentions an investigation wherein he was found not guilty.

Like I said, killing Gary Hinman, well shit happens. Child perversion- the gas chamber is too good for them.

But there is NOTHING but allegations from a fucking pseudonym going on here, allow St. Pontificate to talk about his lack of love for people who could care less if he was alive.

I do like this site and Patty Matt and Liz. If in town I want to be on this year's tour (in a Charlie mask of course). And if guilty I want to sing it from the highest treetop.

But you are slinging around allegations that just are not proven yet. NOT COOL.

All AustinAnn did was relay what she read in a PUBLICLY AVAILABLE parole hearing transcript. I didn't see her take sides in this. She criticized the DA for crying out loud.

Col, I've seen you cut people down with no regard for their family, friends or reputation (Snake's vagina, for instance). You have no high ground here.

Rock on, AustinAnn!!!

Col - I have never given a shit nor do I now give a shit who you really are. But because I have read all his parole hearings I understand that someone who you are accused of being has not only befriended Bobby but offers to help him...

Maybe this explains why you care so much about a convicted killer, the person who blew her life over him, and what I want to pontificate on...

since when does anyone caring what we say have anything to do with saying it??? Am I missing something. Do the participants in TLB need to know or give a shit about us for us to talk about them?? takes many of us out of the conversation no?

You seem to make the rules as you go...

Frankly- I could give a frogs fat ass who you like or what you think about me....

I spent two months on all of these sites trying to promote peace and dialouge so you could come along to start trouble??

Dude what a joke. Move on to something besides insulting people over a convicted killer. we get it- you dig Bobby....People are still going to ask questions.

whatever- you chose your own friends. Keep plucking at me as well. wont change anything. We are all who and what we are :)

I am not going to spend any time in 2013 arguing on the internet over Charles Manson. not even with you Col...

Matt Patty and Liz- please take my name and email off the site it offends other people having me associated with it. you are all good peeps, no hard feelings here..

but I am not going anywhere :)

And I have learned one lesson for the last time. AGAIN- I went way out of my way to be fair and not personally insulting about Bobby. I thought it was not a viciously worded opinion of him. In fact- I offered no conclusion about the art at all other than it puts him in a position for further obstacles by its mere existence.

it never does any good trying to mince my words out of respect....

I do sometimes read the Col's site, and he's just pretty full of himself. Just ignore it would be my advise.

But please don't let the good readers of the BEST manson blog by far become the victim of someone elses opinion of you.

Keep up the good work Saint!

I love how people with a third grade education try to read what the Col writes and then decides what it says.

St. you can rant all you want and it is clear you have nothing but time to do so. You don't have to go anywhere.

But you promote peace? Please bro, you promote peace like Hitler promoted religious equality.

There is only one point (and no, the Col doesn't get butthurt over people using aliases nor does he ask them to get butthurt over him).

Did Barbara and Bobby promote child perversion?

No violins, you silly buffoon.

YES OR NO.

If yes then there is no mercy from the Col or anyone. Burning alive is too good for them.

If NO then we need to promote that just as much.

That is our task. The blogs have raised this issue now it must be definitely determined.

I know Matt has someone on the task

ST - you cannot let this noise get to you, let alone HUMILIATE you. No one on these blogs is ever 100% in agreement and some people handle that basic, unavoidable fact with more grace than others. Maybe Bobby has been wrongly accused here, and as someone with a long-standing association with Bobby, the Col is heated over it. Fine. Whatever. We should all strive to get our facts straight, for the simple sake of reasoned, well-informed discussion. I concede that it's probably not conducive to the goal of educating ourselves to just hurl unproven accusations at these killers, no matter how scummy we already believe them to be (and arrogant, and egomaniacal, and self-aggrandizing, in Bobby's case). But let's also be real here: Bobby B can hardly be accused of worse than what he is actually guilty of - and that is spending several days torturing, and ultimately slaughtering, a by all accounts decent person who had the severe misfortune to generously open his home to this waste of a man once upon a time, not to mention several years spent lying about and obscuring the truth of those events. Is Bobby B a kiddie fiddler? I don't know. Would Bobby B being a kiddie fiddler make him a demonstrably more revolting a human being than he already is? Well, we're just talking in degrees at that point.

People kill people every day for all kinds of reasons, some of them justifiable. There is such a thing as justifiable homicide.

There is no such thing as justifiable child perversion.

Col - Very true. There is such a thing as justifiable homicide. Bobby B however never committed one.

But yeah, in my world being a kiddie fiddler is probably the worst thing you can be, so there's that.

Anyone have access to the questionable imagery that is at the heart of this edifying discussion?

The mediocre erotic art you speak of, Col, is what I have seen. If there's something out there that goes beyond that, let's see the receipts. I hope it doesn't exist but if it does I would scarcely deny myself the opportunity to rake him over the coals for it.

As for other deviants sending Bobby letters detailing their own criminally disgusting behavior - well, Bobby can't be held accountable for that if there's no proof he was involved in/encouraged/condoned it. Notable murderers probably receive correspondence from all manner of questionable, unstable, and outright depraved and despicable people. Flies, trash etc. I'd love to know more about that correspondence and Bobby's reaction/response to it. It appears it was passed from B&B Enterprises and on to Bobby himself. Why?

Anonymous said...

Col I just dont understand why you have to be so rude and insulting to people who are not attacking you and then ask about sense of humor??

do you think it is funny to people when you hold them up for humiliation or call them names or insult them personally???

is it funny when you do it to others only??

you get pretty serious when you here something you dont like.

I am trying hard to be respectful- but I dont think your being fair and frankly I am taking the shit you have written and said about me very personally....

so if you want to laugh it off and move on - now is the perfect time to show some heart to everyone.

I hate to think I was that wrong and foolish about something as important as character judgements. I always thought at the end of the day you were a stand up type of guy. I had always assumed anyway.

Obviously I typed for so long that my point was obstructed. I have cleared this up at least 1/2 dozen times since but one last time :

I have never questioned that the two of them were truly in love. I believe she loved him deeply- she devoted her life to the man.

I think it is strange she let herself get enough to a convicted killer to fall in love. not everyone would let themselves get into a position for that to happen.

I never said that she didn't love him after she got to know him. I have read enough to know that they were into each other very much.

If I worded that poorly or went on to long about it- I am sorry as well

I never intended to disgust you or anyone else with that post. Just to ask a deep question. I didn't do a good job. Lesson learned.

I need to shut it for awhile. I can be told that without making me a punching bag for weeks on your blog and then coming after me in another one.

What I see unfolding here is the double standard faced by any prisoner, not just Bobby, seeking parole. It seems, at this point, that Sequeira is allowed to bring up old unsubstantiated issues leaving Bobby to react, possibly in a negative way diminishing his chances of parole.

Had there been any substance to Sequeira's pronouncement of of Bobby being involved in child porn I think it would have made the news, not only at the time it happened but at subsequent parole hearings. I am waiting for further documentation to surface on this subject. Matt's call out for any of the "Sassy Bottom's" and "Domestic Discipline Digest" newsletters is excellent, for all we know these could be innocent publications with provocative titles, or not....
