Le Pig Studio Presents.....

The following song was recorded at 10050 Cielo Drive in 1992. Actually, the whole album this song is from was recorded there in Trent Reznor's home studio named "Le Pig." The album, of course, is "The Downward Spiral." The song is "Gave Up." Notice Marilyn Manson pretending to play the guitar in the video. In MM's book (The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell) he wrote about staying with Trent Reznor at 10050 Cielo Drive, and filming this particular video. MM stated he wasn't really playing the guitar. He also stated that him, and Trent Reznor picked up some skanks one night, brought them up to the house, and chased them around the yard in the same area where the murder victims were chased to their deaths. Sick!

Trent Reznor went on to state in an interview that when he rented the house, he had no idea that it was the same house where Sharon Tate & the others were butchered. Uh, ok. He must really think people are idiots.

One one hand Trent was saying how he felt bad for the Tates, and felt sick for being there and all of this shit. Then Marilyn Manson said that they had mock seances there and of course Trent took the door. Trent was obviously there exploiting the home.

supposedly Deborah told him he was exploiting her sister, so he stopped. still, downward spiral is a classic.

I really don't get this type of music ...

just not my style... But I know plenty of people think its hotcakes, so I wont disparage.

But,as for the rest of it- choosing that location, the other shit that went on- what can you say???

A band I like much better from my hometown area- The Blues Traveler has a song called 100 years which contains a line appropriate for this song:

" Theres just no accounting for some peoples taste"...

I dont know a single song by Marlyn Manson. Not one. His band came into a Restaurant I was at about 15 years ago ( Maryln used to live about 15 minutes from me- I think they all grew up down here in South Florida) I had no idea who they were at the time- someone had to tell me. I was making jokes about what complete scumbags they looked like....

Then I saw the Bowling for Columbine documentary and off all the politicians and executives they interviewed- Maryln came across as the most thoughtful and intelligent person they spoke with.

I was quite impressed...

But what I am hearing now is disappointing me....

I hope that someday a great family with lots of young kids and pets moves into that location. I hope smiles and the sound of laughter and love engulf the property for the rest of eternity....

That house has seen enough darkness....

I do wonder if Trents mother or child was stabbed 40 something times in there own house - how he would feel if I moved in after and made songs about it for utube in there living room???

Although, something tells me he isn't very close or respectfull towards his mother...

this isn't the type of guy who grew up with a lot of love or attention...

and I guess that is an excuse- for those who get used to making them...

(p.s.)- Before I posted something that would make me look stupid- I went to check on his family background and found this:

Reznor was born in Mercer, Pennsylvania, halfway between Pittsburgh and Erie, the son of Nancy Lou (née Clark) and Michael Reznor.[8] After his parents divorced, he lived with his maternal grandparents.

suprise suprise- lack of parental guidance and influence...

mommy and daddy didnt stick around and love me- so Therefore let me unleash my pent up anger and poor self esteem on the rest of the world...

Sometimes this stuff is just so predictable....

because he didn't get the love and compassion he needed- he is not willing to feel it for others...

I know about his talent and achievements- but does it give him a right to be so insensitive to others?? Like Roman- does being artistic give you caret blanche to be a total asshole to others?

now please leave a dime in my jar- the Doctor is out...

its my Birthday weekend and I have other things to do besides explain the psychology of knuckleheads to all of you lol ( I am an expert- I have lived my whole life as a knucklehead)

:)

Peace and love my brothers and sisters. Look out for each other- we are all we got!!

Have a great weekend and see you all next week!!!

I have so many things to say about this post I don't know where to begin.

1) Trent only took the door with him to New Orleans because he was the last tenant in the house and it was being demolished. why not save a peice of history?

2) Wherever you found that info was false ST. Trent grew up in Cleveland Ohio playing in New Wave bands before forming NIN.

3)The title "The Downaward Spiral" is a metaphor for addiction (Trent was a Heroin addict during this time). It has nothing to do with Helter Skelter.

4) I've always respected you ST. I think your well spoken and Intelegent but who in the hell are you to assume things about a man that you know absolutely nothing about? (ex-Although, something tells me he isn't very close or respectfull towards his mother...

this isn't the type of guy who grew up with a lot of love or attention...

Trent rented the house and released the gave up video featuring him and his friends "recording" the song in the studio. He threw the clips of the yard and house in because he was recieving a lot of shit in the media, so he played into it with the video. BTW that video is the second video shot for the song the first being deemed to graphic by MTV.

You can see more of the house in the NIN home video called "Broken"

Yeah, that is the ONLY reason he took it. He took the door for a specific reason. if he wants to preserve history, he would have bought the home. And why preserve the history of a brutal murder spree.

And the video of this song in Broken home video is pretty fucking wicked fucked up. Anyone who hasn't seen it, go watch it.

Bing... hello and thanks for the reply :)

Headed to Key Largo and cant go back and forth all weekend. I will leave you with the respect of an answer and anyone else will have to take this as my word for the moment and if you want to come and get me- I promise to be back Tuesday....

I wanted to at least check about the guy before posting and I was in a rush- but that was the first thing that came up on him wherever it was I saw it ( wiki maybe?)- it fit right in with my expectations

If I am wrong about his family background then I am a jackass...

I know my geography and Cleveland is Eastern Ohio and Pittsburgh is Western PA ( not that far apart in the scheme of things)- so its possible he was born in one and grew up in the other- does it really matter- the point was.. WERE HIS PARENTS AROUND TO LOVE AND RAISE HIM???

I never said that the Song/CD Downward Spiral meant anything one way or the other - don't know the song, albumn or much besides the name of the band- It isn't my type of music. This video was my first exposure and it disgusted me.

and finally- I respect you too. I am not mad at you for coming at me. I expected that probably a few would. They are a popular band and he is a talented guy. plenty of fans I am sure...

But I want you to understand one thing please. I am not assuming anything about him- I am giving you my very informed opinion about why people end up doing such tasteless things...

I listen to tons of music. I go to multiple festivals every year and see hundreds of live acts. I can prove it. My opinion of a good music is a band or person who can get on stage with an instrument and make music you want to listen to... Thats my choice.

I see here a group of people who are screaming into your face- using an infamous murder scene and a musician/singer named after one of those accused of the murder....

I think its a worthless piece of garbage made by insensitive assholes who needed more pub than they were capable of generating on their own merits to sell....

good so many bought it. I know- I know- its genius music and writing- classic for sure.

I don't buy it- sorry. Not my idea of a good song or idea. If you love it and think he is a great guy- I promise not to be mad at you or anyone else who agrees with you

We can all agree to disagree...

But ask yourself one last time how you feel if they were doing this about someone you loved...

Ask yourself how he would react if someone made the music about a tragedy he went through...

People tend to get funny when things are turned like that lol

Trent's interest in the case may not be that different from the interest that some of us harbor. Just a thought: if you are a private citizen you get to have your own interests and opinions and do your creative thing. If you are in the public eye, you lose your freedom to these things. We all have in common that we want to be heard, we all want to be known, we all want a right to our respective opinions. It's the American way. Patty is not necessarily defending Trent but it does make you go, "hmmmmm." Don't it?

Patty is Dead said...

"Heard," meaning making ourselves understood. NIN has been heard quite a bit.

Hey ST. thanks for your reply.
I hope you enjoy your weekend.

My Downward Spiral comment was directed towards whoever said that the term Downward spiral was in refernce to Helter Skelter. Not towards you.

I just want to say one thing. Aside from the video for "gave up" being filmed at cielo Dr.and The Downward Spiral being recorded there, that is the only thing related to TLB.

Reznor has never used the name Charles Manson or his ideology to sell records. Most of the general public would have no idea that the house shown in the begining of the video was 10500 Cielo DR. There is only two shots of the outside of the house in the video, and the actual performance in the "Le Pig" studio.

And as for Marilyn Manson, he had just been signed to Reznor's Nothing Records Label. He was Trent's Protege at the time, that is why he is in the video.
His name is just for shock value. The original name of the band was "The Spooky Kids". Each member took their name from an infamous sexpot/bombshell of the sixties and combined it with a serial killers last name such as Marilyn Manson, Twiggy Ramirez, Gidget Gein, Ginger Fish, Madonna Wayne Gacy, Daisy Berkowitz.

I think youre reading way much into it. In fact I've never seen Trent talk about CM in any interview ive ever read.

Just wanted two add my two cents.

thanks for taking the time to read what I had to say

Hey Bing, Patty just checked out your profile/audio clip. What's the name of your band?

Reznor made a statement about working in the Tate house during a 1997 interview with Rolling Stone:

While I was working on Downward Spiral, I was living in the house where Sharon Tate was killed. Then one day I met her sister. It was a random thing, just a brief encounter. And she said: 'Are you exploiting my sister's death by living in her house?' For the first time, the whole thing kind of slapped me in the face. I said, 'No, it's just sort of my own interest in American folklore. I'm in this place where a weird part of history occurred.' I guess it never really struck me before, but it did then. She lost her sister from a senseless, ignorant situation that I don't want to support. When she was talking to me, I realized for the first time, 'What if it was my sister?' I thought, 'Fuck Charlie Manson.' I went home and cried that night. It made me see there's another side to things, you know?

He was a young musician getting a ton of tail and needed to be as dark as possible to sell records.

What better place to be macabre and wealthy at the same time?

St. Circumstance said...

Back!!!

Bing- I probably did read too into it.

I was buzzed excited and it caught me off guard.

I listened to your song too- not my style either- but your obviously a very talented person, and despite what your profile says lol- you seem decent and mannered guy as well...

Maybe I give NIN another listen...
