I liked this tune! I don't have any idea how Charlie played it but the Knockouts have done a great job.

Wow, that was great!

I'm no Manson music aficionado so I'm not familiar with the original. If anyone has an mp3 of the original that isn't copyright restricted send it on & we'll post it for comparison.

Thank, Rose for the FJ link!

The Knockouts cut is cool, but the "Family Jams" version you have have up doesn't even sound like the Real Deal ?

Leary: As America moves into a pattern of "chaos and confusion" (Helter Skelter) The Manson Family story becomes more relevant AGAIN !! Smell the $$$$$$

I'm already hearing the phrase Helter Skelter being used to label the issues of the day on overseas news broadcasts. Maybe Paul and Ringo are trying to become more relevant, as THEIR careers begin to fade away.

By the way, the infamous PUTIN (helped the Rebels blow-up the airliner) just visited CUBA. Anyone remember the Cuban Missile Crises ?

Can't argue with that, RH. It seems obvious as both the world economy and environment worsens, Helter Skelter will always be relevant as a catchphrase for social unrest and violent impulsiveness.
Charlie's prophesies about both social and racial upheaval may indeed all come true. We're really not that far off from the majority of Americans being in total survival mode - mush like the rest of the world.

There were 192 Dutch innocent civilians on that Malasian Airlines Airplane....... We Dutch have a day of mourning, and the National Red/White/Blue hangs at half-mast everywhere

We mourn for you, too, Helz. So sad.

Hans, this is your 9/11. We stand shoulder to shoulder with you. On 9-11-01 I had never heard of al-Queda. Today you know who your enemy is. His name is Putin!

My sincere condolences to you and all of the victims!

Hellzbellz: Our hearts go out to you and your countrymen. TobyAnn and I have had personal experiences in the Netherlands that make such a tragedy most tearful.

That did not come from Putin.

HellzBellz said...

Thankz all of you. Personaly I do not know if Putin indeed got something to do with it.Problem is that in that part of Ukraine ,seperatists have proclaimed their own state , when shit like that hapens, there is complete anarchy and Lawless life. But in another way I must say that Putin has have to take responsebility as a world leader. Also because of the ROOT to this mess in Ukraine lies in Russia. There are a lot of rumours all around in the Media I think it takes a while and an INDEPENDENT investigation to sort out what realy happened.
@ Matt, thankz Matt, but comparing this Disaster with 9/11 cant be made...ofcause IF there is a personal envolvement in such, then its different , then there is no measurement between them,I mean personal loss is tragic whatsoever, and if one lost a loved one in an Air-Disaster or in 9/11.....one is not more or less tragic then the other. You guys lost so much more that morning, innocent lives were lost by the Thousands, and besides that, the whole view and values ,all around the World was changed forever. Everybody remembers where he/she was,and what he/she did that day. But I think in about two years this Airplane ShootDown is forgotten by the MainStream around the world. You know ,we Dutch have a little history with planecrashes. Tenerife in the seventies,in the Eighties the El-Al 747 crashed in a populated Area of Amsterdam-Bijlmer (bylmer is a Neighbourhood in Amsterdam)Crashed straight into a HighRisingBuilding wich left hundreds of Deaths and many more Homeless. 4 years ago a 767 in Tripoli came down and there was just 1 sole-survivor, a 7 years old boy from Netherlands....the poor fellow lost his parents and brother then, but is doing fine now...
@ Robert Hendrickson: Did ya have a good time in this rainy little country of my ?? owh .....and Mr Hendrickson can I ask politely if TobyAnn is Mrs Hendrickson ??
Thankz again everyone for the compassion in the tragic plane-shootdown.
Greetings Hans

Sorry, I forgot to mention the Faro disaster in Portugal...also more than 50 Dutch-Civilians lost in DC-10 crash. And the one from Suriname Airways wich lost a Complete Soccer Team of Surinam ex Pro's who lived and played soccer in Netherlands, they were going to play a Match in Suriname.

His intent is to claim additional parts of eastern Ukraine for Russia. His government is putting sophisticated weaponry in the hands of rebels who lack the necessary training to prevent accidents such as this. In my mind, he's responsible.

I wonder what would happen regarding any royalties from the Knockouts' recording?

I remember the proceeds from the GnR version of 'Look At Your Game Girl' ended up with Voytek Fryowski's son, and then when he died, it went to his estate. In a way, that was not fair because CM was not making money out of his crimes - the song was written before TLB.

DebS said...

Equinox, I have emailed the group with your question about the royalties. I also asked if they were obligated to pay royalties, specifically to Frowkowski's family since they are a European band. I'm personally not sure of the laws or if the lawsuit transcends countries.

Anonymous said...

Deb,

Thanks for doing that. I seem to recall when GnR did the cover version, the royalties came to about $500K. Obviously, this group is not anywhere as big as GnR so we would be talking about very different levels of royalties. Nevertheless, we shall see if you get a response.

DebS said...

Equinox, I heard back from the band. This is what they had to say.

"The song is not registered with any music collecting society. And all
unregistered songs are concidered as "folk songs" since you can´t actually
prove who wrote it originally. The Knockouts and their labels follow all
guidelines for paying royalties when playing, recording any type of cover
song since this is regulated by the Music copyright collecting societies.
When a record label releases a cover they pay for using the song to the
collecting societies, the collecting societies then pay the song writer. In
this case there is no registered song writer, and the collecting societies
consider in this case that the song does not belong to any writer so
concidered a folk song.
These days as most you know either bands or record labels make money from
recordings unles they hit it big time."

Debs,

Thanks for that. Interesting - considered a folk song!!! GnR should have claimed that, and saved themselves $500K!

I guess the Frykowski estates attorneys saw $$$$ and went after it on other legal grounds besides mechanical royalty rates because of its association with Manson. Would be interesting to learn why legal loophole was used to collect. Maybe he record company just paid out for fear of bad publicty?

HANS - HellzBellz

YES Tobyann (my wife) and I happened to hit upon the yearly (1994) or so LIDEN liberation celebration.

We've tried explaining to folks back here that the entire city (all streets) were packed with carnival rides, food booths AND Beer Halls. YES, we did actually get lost and it did rain lightly, but nobody seemed to mind. Americans like to brag about events, BUT the rare LIDEN Festival is by the far the most incredible we've EVER witnessed / participated in. OH, we ended up in Liden because at midnight in Amstersdam we could not get a room - they were also having a festival.

Hello Mr. Hendrickson, I think you mean LEIDEN...you forgot to spell the E because you pronounce it like LIDEN (in English/American)But I know what you mean.It is called ,,Leids Ontzet,, its a Big Festival of 3 days in October. Its to celebrate Leiden(important city in 15hundreds)was freed from the Spanish in the ,80years war, in 1574. But anyway, be happy you ended up there. Youve seen some better things from Holland then only Amsterdam.
