Never aired TV special from 1960's

Hi readers! It's been a while, so wanted to bring you a little retro weirdness that I found. Perhaps you have seen it already. If so, please forgive me. I haven't been able to keep up much with the latest & greatest from Mansonblogland, except to make comments every now & then. Please enjoy weird, 1960's era tv special (documentary) that never aired featuring famous film makers & shakers, including Roman Polanski, with his beyond-beautiful wife, Sharon.

Hi Ann,

Welcome back - your articles have been missed.

What an amazing find. In the first segment, Peter Fonda is talking the same sort of verbal shit that you would hear from Charlie M. Sharon was drop dead gorgeous without having to try too hard. Roman, on the other hand, looks like a ferett! I would have liked to have pushed him off that diving board - he did not protect his wife, what with leaving her with two known drug dealers like Sebring and Frykowski. Then he was playing around behind her back. I always wonder what on earth Sharon saw in him because with those looks she could have had her pick of Hollywood. Maybe she felt sorry for him because of his early life experiences, or perhaps she thought he was an intellectual.

Both segments were really interesting - it was like a trip down memory lane. Thanks, Ann.

Sebring was a drug dealer? That's news to me. I knew he was a heavy drug user, but never heard of him being a dealer. Sharon Tate was one of those women who's beauty was so exquisite & rare, that people probably just stared & gawked at her in public. I think her personality made her even more beautiful too. Sharon didn't need to settle for some rodent that disrespected her with other women. Can you imagine how much that broke her heart when she found out about his cheating? I wonder if she ever knew about him screwing Michelle Phillips? That buck toothed bitch could be patting you on the back as a friend with one hand while tickling your husband's coconuts with the other, all with a friendly grin plastered on her face. I can't stand that woman!

thanks Ann. I didn't know George Lucas looked like that back then!
equinox I agree about the Peter Fonda verbal shit. It actually reminded me of Bruce Davis talking in the Manson movie. Fonda did acid with the Beatles and kept saying "I know what it's like to be dead" and John Lennon telling him "Shut up!" leads to "She Said, she said" I think it was partly because Fonda almost died as a child by shooting himself? That's how I remember the story. And then in Easy Rider during the acid trip in the cemetery scene, Peter Fonda telling his mother how much he hates her. I think his mom committed suicide? Poor guy. And I noticed Michael Pollard saying every day he goes through changes sounds like Manson Family talk too.
This must have been made not too long before summer 69 since Fonda was already talking about having made Easy Rider and they've got footage of Hoffman on the set of Midnight Cowboy.

Is Sharon standing in a ditch in that photo? That little troll Roman looks taller than her.

Polanski is 5'5". Sharon was 5'6". The photographer must covered for that somehow.

AustinAnn74 said...

I didn't know Sharon was only 5'6. She looked rather statuesque in photos. Huh, ya learn something new every day, I guess.

Sebring was a drug dealer? That's news to me.

Hi Ann,

Yes, Sebring used to supply his friend, Steve McQueen. McQueen's widow, Neile Adams, wrote in her book 'My Husband, My Friend' that Sebring was bringing drugs to McQueen. It is also confirmed in the McQueen biography by Darwin Porter (don't shoot the messenger, I know Porter is a controversial author).

I seem to remember Schreck mentioning Sebring as being the 'Candyman' during an interview on Brian Davis' radio program.

I can't stand Michelle Philips either. I lost count of who she slept with back in the day.

@austinann,

Ann,

I took the Darwin Porter book about Steve McQueen out of the library, so I don't have it to hand to give you page references. However, Porter gives the names of two bikers who were allegedly sent by McQueen to clear the Sebring residence after the murders. They were instructed to get rid of any drugs and sado masochism equipment. Porter contends that this was not so much to save Sebring's reputation, but rather to play down McQueen's own involvement in these activities. It was at the Sebring residence that McQueen was conducting affairs behind his wife's back. For example, actress Mamie Van Doren said McQ took her to Sebrings where they both indulged in LSD.

AustinAnn74 said...

I don't think Sebring was a full fledged drug dealer, but he probably procured "party favors" for select clients of his that would never have openly purchased drugs from just anyone. As a matter of fact, I have a close friend who is a well known stylist in the Dallas area who does just what we're talking about for his bitchy, wealthy Dallas clientele. I don't consider him a dealer, but a procurer. Hollywood back then and now has always been hush hush about drugs and sex. No celebrities wants their dirty laundry exposed ever!

Hey Ann - someone who sells smack or crack on the streets might be looked upon differently than someone who sells coke to his friends but essentially both are drug dealers (certainly in the eyes of the law). Whether your clientele is people you know or people you don't as soon as drugs and money change hands you're a dealer.

So they(Bikers) got into Sebrings recidence BEFORE L.A.P.D. did, the next after the murders ?????

ColScott said...

Sebring wasn't a dealer like you would normally think of one, he was a conduit who got things that his clients wanted. Drugs are every where in this case. Black people rising up not so much

Well, where I'm from, it's not the same thing, but, I understand what you mean.

"...So they(Bikers) got into Sebrings recidence BEFORE L.A.P.D. did, the next after the murders ?????"

That is what is in the book. I am sure it is also in Nikolas Schreck's book that the Sebring residence was cleared of dubious substances on McQueen's instructions, so presumably it would have to be BEFORE LAPD got there. It would all come down to how long it took LAPD to get round to everything. You have to remember it took them a considerable time to identify poor Steve Parent.

I understand your thinking HellzBellz, I would have said the same, but we are assuming that LAPD would go as quickly as possible to Jay's home. Perhaps due to the number of victims found that morning, they were caught on the hop.

The book I read it in is "Steve McQueen, King of Cool: Tales of a Lurid Life" by Darwin Porter. The author is known to be a bit sensationalist:)

Although friendly with both, McQueen attended Jay's funeral, but not Sharon's, and apparently Polanski always held that against him.

There aren't two laws for drug dealing - one to friends and another to the general public. Calling him a procurer or a conduit is splitting hairs - if he sold illegal drugs for money he was a dealer.

The perception of someone who sells to friends and someone who sells to anyone is no doubt different and in a court of law any decent lawyer would argue for a lesser sentence for someone dealing to friends. But the charge would still be the same.

Thanks so much for the interesting videos, Austin Ann. I hate the way Sharon sat there mute while Roman went on and on, like she was just a piece of arm candy. BTW, speaking of drugs, Sharon took LSD several times and she said it opened up the world for her. The last time she took it was with Roman.

I have been looking through various Steve McQueen biographies to try to get any insight on Jay Sebring. Here are a couple of extracts from the Neile Adams McQueen book:-

"...Jay was also the person who introduced cocaine into our household."

McQueen, Neile Adams (2006-11-09). My Husband, My Friend: A Memoir (p. 101).

"...On Thursday, August 7, 1969, Jay Sebring came by the house to give Steve a little trim. When I said good-bye to Jay that afternoon little did I dream it was the last good-bye. Steve and Jay had agreed to meet up with each other the following evening after dinner at Sharon Tate’s house. Jay wanted to visit with Sharon before going to San Francisco for the weekend...

As it turned out, luck was with Steve that following Friday night. He had run into a little chickie whom he fancied and decided to forego Jay."

McQueen, Neile Adams (2006-11-09). My Husband, My Friend: A Memoir (p. 197).

"...Sharon Tate was buried the following Wednesday. We did not attend her funeral. Not knowing what madness was still out there, Steve felt one funeral for the day would have to suffice. We elected not to attend Sharon’s and to go instead to Jay’s funeral, since he had been a much closer friend than Sharon. Those of us who came together in one car sat in the front and second rows of the church. The group included Steve, me, Elmer Valentine, Henry Fonda, Warren Beatty, and Jim Garner. Steve carried a gun in his breast pocket. Just in case. At the church at Forest Lawn I was shocked to find Jay in an open casket. But considering his violent death, the morticians had done a masterful job.

For the next few weeks the whole town, it seemed, was under investigation. Certainly the police went through Jay’s phone book and contacted everyone in it..."

McQueen, Neile Adams (2006-11-09). My Husband, My Friend: A Memoir (p. 198).

"...I found Sharon to be nice and totally guileless. She seemed willing to do anything Jay asked her to. I don’t think Marty Ransohoff approved of their relationship or of Jay’s influence on Sharon, whom Marty seemed to be grooming into a Marilyn Monroe-like star. But I doubt he ever said anything to her..."

McQueen, Neile Adams (2006-11-09). My Husband, My Friend: A Memoir (p. 120).

There are two different Americas. One lives on one side of the tracks and the other lives on the opposite side.

A spokesperson for the Bland Family recently said: "We are not afraid of ISIS, but we are afraid of the COPS."

Sebring apparently "distributed" DRUGS to HIS celebrity friends, where dirty, nasty "drug dealers" SELL DRUGS to anyone who can Pay $$$ for the product.

Of course each thinks the other is NOT worth pissing-on and with very little cause, would have the other wacked.

Nothing personal, just business.

Shorty "Guzman" KILLS alot of people, but that does NOT make HIM a "BAD" drug dealer. It makes HIM a GOOD businessman.

IF you don't KNOW which side of the tracks YOU came from - that can be very dangerous.

Equinox, I've had a Steve McQueen, Neile Adams post sitting for a year or more. Since you brought it up I'll pull it out of mothballs...

Matt,

Good stuff. I downloaded the Adams book on Amazon early this morning (UK time), so I haven't read the whole thing. I just searched for the relevant terms i.e. Sebring.

Cheers

Do you know what I find absolutely creepy about the clip where Polanski is talking? He talks about how different it is when someone gets a gun and shoots someone right in front of you than in a film than in real life. Little did they know that the exact, same thing happened to Sharon. She saw Jay, Abigail and Voytek get attacked & killed right in front of her. Horrible, just horrible.

Ann,

Maybe his mind was going back to his wartime experiences with the Nazis. I seem to recall him speaking (documentary?) about seeing people shot during his childhood. The horrifying thing for Sharon is that by seeing everyone else killed, she would know that she couldn't be allowed to live. What happened to her that night was beyond words or comprehension.

There was something about the two clips that reminded me of the cast of 'Austin Powers' - groovy people:)

Sometimes I think the mental torture the victims went through beforehand was worse than the actual physical part of these murders.

A friend would not sell you drugs. They want you on drugs to control you, or manipulate you. For money.

Equinox previously posted quote a from Mrs. McQueen about attending Sebring's funeral:

"Those of us who came together in one car sat in the front and second rows of the church. The group included Steve, me, Elmer Valentine, Henry Fonda, Warren Beatty, and Jim Garner."

So then II found this quote from the IMDB bio on James Garner, apparently a quote from Garner's autobiography:

"(on Steve McQueen) Steve was my neighbor for some time, I called him "Crazy McQueen", because, quite frankly, he was crazy. We were friends, but he wanted to play my part in Grand Prix (1966) and because of that we didn't talk for four years. He wasn't a great actor, but he was a star - McQueen had probably the highest amount of star quality I've ever seen in an actor."

So, James Garner shared a limo with McQueen to Sebring's funeral.

Seems like the funeral ended their feud of almost 4 years.

Garner I'm sure was the closest to Doris Day out of that bunch in the limo having starred together in big movies.

DirectorNVL, there aren't any really true friends, especially in Hollywood. You can use the term "friend" loosely. Acquaintance is more like it. For instance, there is a gay guy that I go out with sometimes who I call my friend, but really he is just a person I go out drinking with on occasions. He isn't a true friend, because well, he just isn't. He is catty & bitchy and you can't rely on him when the going gets tough, but when I am referring to him I will say, "A friend & I are going out for "ladies night" in Austin." See what I mean?
