Patty had the opportunity to check out a cool retrospective on artist Norman Rockwell this past week. She could not help but notice after all the recent hullabaloo about Bobby and his pervy wife that Rockwell has several paintings depicting children being spanked or with their pants down:
So, this is not pornography because of the intent of the artist? Surely there are those out there who get their rocks off on innocent stuff like this. But we accept this as art nonetheless. Interesting, no?
The first picture brings up two questions that haunt me. When is the last time a doctor gave his own injections and how on earth did Charlie get a doctor to come out to the ranch to treat an outbreak of the clap?
ReplyDeleteDude, you must be very young...
ReplyDeleteand so yes, BB equals Norman Rockwell, no doubt. Probably why the DA didn't persue it after it came up in the parole hearing...
ReplyDeleteI think the BB paintings were a lot more graphic. Plus, let us not forget the questionnaire.
ReplyDeleteI think the definitions of art and pornography have changed over the years. When Rockwell was doing his illustrations for magazines back in what now seems to be the dark ages the type of drawings you've posted were considered innocent, depicting everyday situations that the majority could relate to.

Ann is correct, it is the intent that is at the heart of the question.

ReplyDeleteStarship,
ReplyDeleteThe last time a doctor paid me a house call was in 1954. Were you alive at that time?
The questionnaire is what makes Bobby's "pervy"
ReplyDeletePatty agrees with all of you! Thanks for playing.
ReplyDeleteYes....us old-timers remember when doctors made house calls. We also remember that spankings were much more prevalent back in the day. Your teacher at school was allowed to administer them. Your parents were still allowed to administer them. It was an accepted form of discipline. If Norman Rockwell wanted to create a painting of a mother disciplining her child today, it would portray her taking away the childs I-pad.
ReplyDeleteNo, 1954 is before me, but up here in the sticks we had good ole country doctors who traveled far and wide and administered their own injections well into the 1970s.
ReplyDeleteBut, alas, those days are long over.
My point is that the Rockwell pictures don't represent today of course. And instead of bussing all the clap ridden residents of Spahn, it probably was easier for one doctor to come to them.

ReplyDeleteDont know about USA but doctors made house calls in UK in the 70s. It was called doing the rounds. wonder if they do it now. And spanking was absolutely allowed. As I remember angrily.
