I meant 'Kathy' up above instead of Mary/Mary Ann- Mary is what Kathy de Grimston is called in Bainbridge's book. That's another weird thing about it, the fact that he uses aliases for everyone, including the cult's actual name. I have no idea why in the latter case, because it's very obvious who the book is supposed to be about. Anyhow... <3Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8171370990642927748.post-8861186720658889282014-08-20T01:36:41.875-04:002014-08-20T01:36:41.875-04:00And damnit, I meant Amazon two posts up, not YouTu...And damnit, I meant Amazon two posts up, not YouTube. Even if the cult was totally harmless (which Bainbridge alleges it was), those rumours have stuck and people believe them. It is like someone who was accused of rape or murder and yet acquitted in court- that stigma will still be associated with them forever. Well, I dunno if the post is 'great...@Trilby:

Well, I dunno if the post is 'great', but I do appreciate the compliment! It does feel nice to be a contributor for a change. The real reason that I asked Matt to join Team Blog is actually because I am trying to impress Suze. Think it will work? :P

You're pretty accurate in talking about how the Process was (or became, really) an aggregate rather than a single group. There were factions within The Process based on which deity one affiliated with, although at one point they started introducing a dualist concept- so you could be a Jehovian-Luciferian, for instance. But there were also definite differences between chapters- the Toronto chapter was quite independent, for instance, and towards the end of the Process' existence they became quite incensed when the remaining Processeans in California tried to physically muscle into their territory.

As you said, the best example of the splits is when the de Grimstons divorced, Robert was removed from power, and Mary reoriented the group as The Foundation, a heavily 'Jehovian' sect. Robert promptly tried to form a competing Process Church with some old members, which ultimately failed. A lot of this was prompted by the Manson aspect- The Process desperately tried to make their image more 'square' after they were dragged through the muck. They started heavily downplaying Christ & Satan, which caused a rift between members... and none of this was helped by the growing antipathy in Robert & Mary Ann's marriage.

I haven't read the LSFD book, and I really should. The Process are fascinating and tbh I don't know much about their actual connection to Manson beyond what Bainbridge writes- and he seems convinced there was none. Bainbridge's ultimate summation of the cult is that they were relatively harmless in terms of actions and philosophy, but that they were STILL a cult. Ley cult members lived lives of comparative simplicity, while the de Grimstons and their inner circle lived in opulent mansions paid for by the money & hard work of members, swanned around Europe, etc. etc. The most interesting part of Bainbridge's book for me was his description of the final desperate attempts to keep The Process going. Nearly all their old, intelligent, mentally stable members were gone, and they were essentially trying to run the cult as a crash-pad for street people. Really recommend his book for this element alone, but it can be hard to find- even new copies retail for over $100 on YouTube.

Sorry for the long post. Glad people enjoyed my contribution. :) (and I was kidding about trying to impress Suze, don't worry)

(maybe)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8171370990642927748.post-17189418105250834342014-08-19T21:33:30.932-04:002014-08-19T21:33:30.932-04:00I wonder why most of the members of the Process Ch...I wonder why most of the members of the Process Church that now run Best Friends Animal Sanctuary have changed their names? I think where a...Hey, This post is great, BTW, V.B. I think where a lot of hairs get split, so to speak, when it comes to the Process, is in the labels. An aggregate "The Process" seems to have been used when really the Process spawned different offshoots, chapters, & I'd bet alliances with other like-minded groups. Not to mention the hierarchy, Satan/Jehovah/Lucifer factions, etc. To be truthful, I find the subject both repulsive & fascinating. I'm like a moth to a flame. Bugliosi alleged that Danny DeCarlo was a member of a Santa Barbara offshoot. Wild/Ely was based out of Goleta at the time. Ed S. said Ely was selected as "American head" after the Process L.A. contingent left Cali. Manson (as told to Emmons) described stopping "outside of Santa Barbara" to get a stock of drugs on his way to Big Sur the week prior to TLB. So we have the whole recurring Santa Barbara thing.
As far as the ex-Processeans that formed "Best Friends" - I'm an animal nut and rescuer. Can't remember the exact year, several years ago, anyway - I began donating to them. To my surprise, I received several phone calls from, I can't remember his name off the top of my head, DePeyser, the one who ended up marrying Mary Ann. Usually I'm not a hypocrite, but as far as the Best Friends contingent goes, I love them for what they've done for the animals. I've talked to Fay a few times with cat questions (Mother Hathor, I think was her Process name) & like her alot. I think the Process et al. was shady as all fuck, but I can't bring myself to hold it against the Utah crew. Ex-crew. (Sorry if I get in trouble for bad language, my mouth needs a bar of soap daily).
Trilbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12310843050495075993noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8171370990642927748.post-68212364934298432802014-08-19T17:17:29.050-04:002014-08-19T17:17:29.050-04:00Brother Ely is alive and has done very, very well ...Brother Ely is alive and has done very, very well for himself... So much of the stuff on the periphery of the Manson murders was conjecture and speculation.

Manson was apparently schooled in Scientology by Lanier Ramer while at McNeil Island. The Process was started by former Scientology members so any overlap in philosophy between Manson and the Process would seem to have come from Scientology teachings.

DebShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17093893870315262396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8171370990642927748.post-16469771100604328782014-08-19T09:41:41.884-04:002014-08-19T09:41:41.884-04:00This was a really interesting read
