Tour 2017: Slipping in the Mix with Steve Grogan

On our first day we dropped in on Steve Grogan. He was performing in Oakland at a terrific vegan restaurant with a band headed by the very talented and gregarious Melvin Leonard. The band began with some soothing, smooth jazz numbers. They also covered tunes by artists as diverse as Santana, War and Ernie K-doe. They also played some tunes from their CD. They were terrific!

Below are a couple of videos. Please pardon my shaky hand. Well worth the trouble to watch. Please enjoy.

  1. So many questions!
Did you tell him that you knew who he is?
If so, what was his reaction?

  2. Wow... just wow...
Clem doesn't look 100% comfortable in the group shot... unlike his band-mates. I guess he's not used to having his "fan club" turn up :-)
    He sings well.

  8. Steve's got a look like the cops just showed up. I'm wondering if he would've recognized any of you. I enjoyed the little bit of music I've heard so far. Are Stoner and Patty making googly eyes at each other?? Thanks for the long clips!

  9. I don't know how I am going to find the enthusiasm and time but this one blog post has made me realize how much the Official TLB Murders Blog needs to return. Just because I had hoped this Blog would move beyond its weak beginnings with new management did not mean that it in fact could.

What the hell is the point of being tourists to history? You have Sandy's SO with you on the trip and you take a photo and ask nothing meaningful?

By text this morning I was told that the blog that lifts fotos from Facebook to show "where they are now" is not about outing people.

Steve Grogan/Adam Gabriel drove away with the killers knowing that Leno and Rosemary on Waverly Place were to be killed. He fucking laughed about it.

Steve Grogan/ Adam Gabriel helped to BEHEAD Shorty Shea and bury the body.

Worrying about the safe spaces of Scramblehead Grogan is totally horseshit.

You know when Steve Grogan gets redeemed? When he fucking owns up to what was done or he is fucking dead himself.

    I just can't....

    1. I thought Sheas body was intact? Otherwise I concur whole heartedly and can people stop finding excuses for the fisherman's wharf, doesn't matter how you look at it he's a vicious little knob head with a massive chip on both shoulders.

    2. He was a teenager who was warped by a communal mindset. He was strong enough to bring himself back.

    3. Col why does everything need your approval? Why did they go there? Because they friggin felt like it! Get over yourself!

  13. What would be accomplished by being aggressive with Grogan at his professional venue? Just letting him know how pissed you are that he helped murder someone 48 years ago and got out of jail? Or getting a story/information from him? I don't picture your attitude toward him being any help, Col.

So Matt and company went to see him, video the music and take a photo with him and the band and share it with us. I suppose one of them could have tried nicely to get a private conversation with him-maybe they did, I don't know.

Being in the presence of a notorious person who has been living a quiet life for decades, you would know what you feel comfortable doing, and what feels wrong for you. I guess if you'd be comfortable asking him TLB questions then you'd do it.

As with all the Manson friends, if they wanted to tell their story they would do it.

  14. No worries, Hump it's Col's birthday so he gets a pass.

    HEY HIPPIDOLL!!!!!

  15. Col. You and my son share a birthday.

  16. Colonel can go to Oakland and confront Clem himself if it's so damned important to him.

  17. So are SVH, Matt, George and Patty photoshopped into that group pic ?

  18. I wonder what the cranky pants would have said or done in the same situation..me thinks hes all piss and wind ...

  19. Stoner can't stop laughing. He says I look like I was photobombing Clem.

  20. Presuming Clem knows who the four MFB amigos/amiga are, and not being privy yet to any potential conversational exchanges between them all, it would be interesting to see how Clem reacts to all this. Will he jump musical groups trying to become incognito again, decide to embrace and and open up to greater curiosity contacts, join the foreign legion or ??? As already mentioned, he doesn't look too comfortable in the group pic.

  21. Robert, when the pic was taken he was joking around and laughing about getting paid extra for the pic. He was a little fatigued though. It was immediately after the three songs he centered in the second video.

  22. Was it a coincidence George was also wearing a fedora? Looks like he's with the band! Happy birthday Col.

  23. That had to be an excellent night!!

    Happy Birthday Col!!

Return for what though ? For another 10 years of chasing your tail in search of your holy grail that you don't want to accept and insulting people and justifying it with "it's my blog, I'll write what I like" ?
I don't know if it's just your wind up but you've been sounding like this all is getting to you.

Steve Grogan helped to BEHEAD Shorty Shea

You rarely slipped up Col but it has to be said that when you did, you drank the Atlantic, mate.

    the Official TLB Murders Blog

As you are wont to remind anyone that will listen, official doesn't always mean best or even worthwhile.

  25. Hi, this is Thomas in Dallas. Would love to ask Clem about Susan Atkins and the other girls at the Ranch....Though we have to respect Clem's life today and his privacy! I'm sure he lives every day with what he did in the past....I believe everyone on the Manson Blog Tour, treated him the right way....

  26. "Official" means deemed official by an estate, person associated with the subject, etc. How could the Tate/LaBianca blog be an "Official" Blog.
I own an official website of a late famous actor and had to get permission from the estate holder to label my website official. Just curious.

I think it was a tongue in cheek designation, John. A bit like Kermit The Frog.

    I Love Susan Atkins said...

    I bet he doesn't.
One of the reasons I'm interested in the book Dianne Lake has written is to see exactly what she remembers, given that she was a kid at the time, literally, and drugs rather over~wrought her mind and her mental health was at best, debatable.....a bit like Clem, actually. Not only that, how many people that you weren't particularly close to that you've not seen since the age of 18/19 46 years previously could you really give a rounded description of to do them any justice ?

  28. Did anyone inform him of why you were all there, touring these sites? I'd imagine he'd be quite uncomfortable if he knew.

  29. BTW, the guitar is a Fender.

  30. Hi first time commenting, do you guys think hypothetically if henrickson was still alive would there have ever been the possibility of a 3rd documentary? I know there are several members willing to talk about how they feel nowadays but some key players (ex. Stevo, Mary brunner, ruth moorehouse) you never really hear from them, and im sure alot of people would. Im not saying they'd ever open up, but if they did, i suppose itd be to him.

  31. Toby, I doubt it. He did though have many unused hours of raw footage left. Hopefully his family puts those assets to good purpose.

  32. Damn, thats interesting to hear. Itd be a real shame for that to go to waste.thanks for the blog matt. Ive been really into learning about the family now for awhile and this is by far the most resourceful place to learn. Its such a mystery. The more i learn, the more questions i have.certain things just dont add up.
