'Jay Sebring....Cutting to the Truth' chronicles the 1960s rise of the celebrity Hollywood hairstylist before he became one of the Charles Manson cult's grisly murder victims.
Shout! Studios has nabbed the North American rights to Jay Sebring....Cutting to the Truth — a documentary feature from director Anthony DiMaria, 1010 Films and Halation — about the 1960s Hollywood trendsetter Jay Sebring.
Sebring is mostly remembered as a faceless victim of the grisly Charles Manson cult murders of Roman Polanski's pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, and three others at the director's Benedict Canyon residence in August 1969. But the film by DiMaria, Sebring's nephew, chronicles the late haircutter's rise as a Hollywood celebrity who styled the hair of Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, The Rat Pack and Elvis Presley, among other stars.
Jay Sebring....Cutting to the Truth, co-produced by Noor Ahmed, DiMaria and Johnny Bishop and executive produced by Chad Layne and Voss Boreta, will screen at film festivals this spring before a commercial release on streaming, digital and other major platforms later in 2020.
"This is an intimate, fascinating portrait of a man whose legacy is so much more than how he died. It’s how he lived that is the main subject here, and his profound contribution to an entire industry, as well as to the style of the 1960s, is expertly — and finally — celebrated,” Jordan Fields, vp acquisitions at Shout! Studios said in a statement.
Sebring was played by Emile Hirsch in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. DiMaria's documentary has interviews collected over 12 years with Dennis Hopper, Nancy Sinatra, Tarantino, Quincy Jones, Debra Tate, Manson prosecutor Stephen Kay and Vic Damone.
The distribution deal was unveiled by Shout! Factory’s founders and CEOs, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos, DiMaria and Fields, who negotiated the pact with Ahmed on behalf of the filmmakers.
I wonder if they will mention the allegations that Sebring was dealing cocaine at that time.
ReplyDeleteJay/ Thomas was a true inovator in men's hair styling, but he was also into S and M, and a dealer of Cocaine. At the time of his death he was nearly broke. I'm sure his nephew will gloss over the truth. He didn't deserve to be murdered, but he sure was not a saint!
ReplyDeleteThe dirty little secrets are only known today because of the murders. I’ve made this point here several times and that is that nobody in the public (or outside of Jay’s inner circle) would know about his sexual preferences or his coke dealing had he not been slaughtered. All of the victims had dirty laundry that was made public. It’s another aspect of being a “victim” that we tend to overlook because the murder itself is usually where we focus our attention.
ReplyDeleteHow was this man's sex life, financial state or if he chose to sell blow anyone's business? The documentary is about his barber career, not about bashing the poor man. What the hell?! Nobody says he was a saint. He just had the misfortune of being murdered and having all his dirty laundry exposed.

ReplyDeleteI would like to find one person out there that does not have some sort of dirty laundry in their past. Being that this documentary was produced by a family member, I would assume it would be about his childhood and his accomplishments in the hair styling world. We have all already heard about his sexual preferences and his drug use. Who cares. It was the 60's. And like someone said above, it was only blown out of proportion because he was a murder victim in a very high profile murder. I've always wondered if he would have been a name middle America would have known for his profession if he would have lived longer. I am looking forward to seeing it.

Ann, it is very important what Jay did in his personal life. It helps to explain the real motive which is why we are all here.

ReplyDeleteThis person is also in the Hendrickson documentary accompanying the girls on a garage run.
There are a few other photos that this person is included in as well.

ReplyDeleteI met the nephew a few times going back I think as far as 1985. He seems like a solid person if a bit deluded about the current specs of the case.
