Channels Nukes Schreck - Book Review

Michael Channels

Friday, Grim called Nikolas Schreck's The Manson File Myth and Reality of an Outlaw Shaman a "modern day fairy tale." Yesterday, Michael Channels discussed Schreck in this video. My ears perked up when Channels echoed Grim.

"This book is like Alice in Wonderland to me."

Before I got going on the video, I noticed a pinned comment identifying a Harry Martin as the originator of the drug burn theory circa 1992 in Martin's Napa Sentinel. The weekly paper did not begin publishing until 8 Jan 1993 but I gave commenter Jack Tatum a pass since he was so good at Ohio State and also because three decades have passed since the info was fresh.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find the original article. Channels linked his viewers to a reprint of Martin's piece.

- Martin's Napa Sentinel Wikipedia page.

- Here's an article on Martin from Bohemian.com in May 2005.

Of course, I want you to make your own decisions but imo Martin looks like he wants to sell me a Mercury Cougar that blows white smoke out of the exhaust pipe if I even dream of driving on the highway.

C'mon down to Honest Harry's today and drive home tonight in style!

I jest. Honest Harry Martin was a tabloid journalist and not a used car salesman. Same career as Tom O'Neill now that I think about it. I wonder if Tom also enjoys denim shirts? I bet he dresses better. My brain keeps telling me parallels exist between the two writers but I can't put it all together.

Anyway. I watched Channels' assassination of Schreck. Channels give sources like he's supposed to and makes interesting points throughout the presentation. I expected some factional, he-said-she-said kinda stuff, but instead walked away wondering for the first time if Schreck's book was cut out of whole cloth. Not saying I'm trying to go full weR7 with you, but I did find myself recently canceled as a podcast guest because I'm from the mean and clueless Manson Blog.

Manson Blog. Former home of filmmaker Robert Hendrickson. RIP.

Channels' account of the Schreck/Channels meeting with Robby Krieger blew my mind. I'm not sure I'll ever forget it. What are your thoughts on Channels' views on Schreck and his book, neo-Nazi claims included?

As for the Manson File, I suppose I'll err on the side of that Epimenides dude while I wait. Someday, maybe my book will arrive and allow me to verify things myself. +ggw

  5. Jay, my dvd copy of Leslie, My Name is Evil arrived in the mail over the weekend from beatgoeson.com. Nice little add to my growing collection. If time allows, I'm going to watch and screen cap Charlie Says today.

    1. I enjoyed Charlie Says as a movie. There’s obviously going to be some issues with accuracy. I think a lot of it derives from having to fit the story into a movie time frame, and having to shortcut certain events in order to develop the characters they are focused on.
I think the actresses all did a pretty good job. They even got a Gypsy that looks like Gypsy.
Looking forward to hearing your take on it.

HAH! The blood runs hot in Texas.

Pardon, GW, but I thought you were a Brit. Is this incorrect?

  7. Thanks, Jay. I don't sweat accuracy all that much in these films. My interest lies in how we culturally reacted to Manson and Co.

  8. Shoe, that's Grim. I'm a Buckeye thru and thru. Got my undergrad down on High Street.

At least that's what the paper inside the frame says. Bong hits of resin and tennis video games are somehow more clear in my mind. I wrote a twenty page paper in a night once. That memory will remain forever fresh.

  11. He reviewed a book from 1987. Charlie asked him of he read Myth and Reality and he said no, "it's too big". Channels can't nuke anyone with his fake will. He visited Charlie twice despite what he says. He flings shit at the Paulcast group, but dismisses Rollins wanting to release music as "rumor'. He also doesn't bath. We met him, I see homeless in LA who are cleaner and smell less bad.

  12. I was literally standing in my kitchen eating a delicious donut and thinking "Manson Mythos" is truly the best name for this study all the way around at the same time you were typing your comment. How weird. I'd share if donuts could be passed through screens and you're a donut kinda guy.

Can you share your thoughts on that meeting with Krieger? A little bird told me you were also there.

  13. Why does every Manson researcher hate every other Manson researcher? Is it the Manson Curse?

  14. If Channels says it then it must be true..... SHEEEIT!

I'm damn sure that I'm not tripping over myself to cancel my Manson File order just because some self-appointed critics spew a vineyard of sour grapes!!

@ Mythos:You're probably more accurate re. Channels than Channels is re. Schreck.

Whether Michael Channels has eaten too many sour grapes, I cannot say. Whether he's a self-appointed critic, I do not know. Whether you should cancel your order however, I can definitely comment on with surety and even a little bit of opinionated authority {πŸ˜† πŸ˜… πŸ˜‚ 🀣} ~ don't do it podnah !
The 900+ page tome is damn good book. As I have commented many times since 2018, it is full of holes {which I doubt will be corrected in the new version, seeing as though most of his arguments would fall apart} and incorrect information, some of which may have been understandable, much of which was near unforgivable. Its starting point is, like so many helter sceptic books, to scotch HS, but in order to do this, it enters fantasy land on an extended visa. If I was being generous, I'd call it gossip. If I was being mean, I'd call it lies.
What's quite interesting to me however, is how Charlie, in all decades from the mid 50s on, was able to home in on people that would be so enraptured with him, that they'd make great, articulate cases on his his behalf, defending the undefendable, even where stuff that clearly harms him is there for all to see.
That said, Shreck does concentrate in places, on aspects of Manson that are rarely spoken of elsewhere, or are virtually never taken seriously. For that reason alone, he deserves at least a handshake and some cheesy garlic bread.
I was also fascinated that he places Manson not only at the murder scene of Cielo, but actively taking part. With friends like Shreck, who needs Helter Skelter ? 😱 πŸ‘ŽπŸΏ

      Thank you for your critique.
Any 900 page book written about the Manson saga will definitely require a lot of separation of wheat from chaff!
From what I've heard from his long interviews, it should be quite the reading experience.
If only they would send me the damn thing!

  18. I’ve only read the original 1988 version, so I am very interested in receiving my copy. Hopefully they are in the process of shipping them out. Can’t wait to see the evidence and connections that Schreck makes. I’m curious to see how he puts Manson at Cielo, taking part no less. Should be a great read.
