  4. "The Shorty Shea Experience" package. Matt hits you in the back of the head with a wrench when you're not looking and then the group steals all your stuff and buries you in a shallow grave.

  6. A little off topic but when I was looking at the tours of the Spahn ranch, I was wondering if any of the family or hangers-on were still living there when the ranch burned down. I was also trying to figure out the time line between the burning of the ranch and the Hendrickson documentary. The ranch burned in September of 1970 and the Hendrickson documentary was released in 73. In the documentary there is a lot of footage of family at the ranch, so that footage would had to have been filmed prior to Sept 1970. Just made me curious of who if anyone was still at the ranch when it burned and if not, when and why did they leave?

The 2nd of May is a great album, the second and final one, by May Blitz.

    1. I've had the distinct pleasure of meeting and, maintaining contact with the great Tony Newman. He came to Vancouver to reunite/record with Jamie Black and Reid Hudson (both live near me). Tony Newman is a wonderful bloke...his memory is somewhat foggy on the Bowie/T Rex years though ;-)

    2. PS - Tony was the drummer for the Everly Brothers until Phil's untimely death in 2014.

I do believe that the VERTIGO label was created for The May Blitz (who were tardy with their debut lp due to vand member instability).

Colosseum, Juicy Lucy and, initially and, Uriah Heep were just 3 9f the bands releasing lps on Vertigo before the May Blitz finally released their first album.

Vertigo is probably most associated with the early releases of Sabbath, the exceptionally talented but especially overlooked PATTO, and the post-The Story of Simon Simopath (debut concept album) by the 60s UK act NIRVANA.

Thanks for reminding me about the May Blitz Grim! I'm going to ask my friend Rob if any tracks were demo's...or, completed. I'll try to get some mp3 files or, maybe wav files on disc. I'll try to get permission to share FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY!

Tony had some hilarious tales about the SOUNDS INCORPORATED tours (including 1964 US Tour & Shea Stadium) with the Beatles etc...and, how frustrating and unpredictable it was playing with Jeff Beck!

    Taken from Robert Hendrickson's "Death to pigs" pg 177 {Oct 28 '70}:

After having some very productive studio sessions, we all decided to re-visit the Spahn movie ranch. Unfortunately, the ranch had recently burned to the ground in a fire....When the fire started about 10 miles away, Gypsy told me that they were already packing and preparing to leave. I thought "Oh, here's more of that end of the world stuff coming from Ms Armageddon herself." After all, this was just another Santa Anna wild fire, famous for occurring every summer, but the Spahn Ranch had never been affected before. Later, the Family explained that when the fire reached Spahn, the firemen actually stood by and watched as the Devil's playground vanished from God's earth. Apparently the "Establishment was beginning to erase the 1960s from American history.

Kinda interesting that Hendrickson's first thought as Gypsy spoke was a disdainful one about their apocalyptic stance. It kind of ties in with what is reported in "Helter Skelter" about the Family females all dancing around as Spahn burned singing "Helter Skelter is coming down....."

    1. Thank you Grim. So I am assuming that if Gypsy was there so was Lynette, Sandy, Cappy, Brenda and maybe Bruce and Clem. So, effectively, the fire is what scattered the family and effectively ended the family.

  9. He was a much travelled musician and I always thought, a rather underrated drummer. There again, May Blitz were underrated. Having said that, I can see why they never really made it. Some bands need time and 5 albums and others will knock out only two and die and then years later, one sees just how fantastic they were.

    1. Underrated drummer when it's being judged by the fans...and, a fair amount of journalists most definitely. Very highly regarded in the music community and his CV is kinda mind boggling.

I hear ya on the lack of success for The May Blitz too. Tony was fresh from The Jeff Beck Group and, the embryonic May Blitz featured Clem Clempson on guitar!!!

      Cheers

  11. Grim,
Good answer to Matthew's question. I'd forgotten about Death to Pigs and wasn't up to listening to Inside the Manson Gang to try and answer his question.
I can't wait for Col. Scott's treatment of Robert Hendrickson. Maybe he'll address the possibility of someone getting Mrs. Hendrickson some money from the rights to her husband's publications. I understand she's in a bad way and don't know if they had children.
The asking prices on some things Manson are through the roof on ebay lately. Recently, someone wanted $150.00 for Little Paul's book and someone else asked $350.00. I didn't even see a copy of Manson (1973) on there. Now seems like the time to sell.

Kevin seems to be doing just fine for himself as a building contractor for big bucks high-end homes in the Monterey/Carmel area.
    Here's his website.

Bobby Beausoleil said something kind of prophetic at the start of 1970 when he said "the whole thing balances on whether the Family stays together in their heads and doesn't break up and start testifying against itself." Well, that process was already under way by the time he said that {indeed, he was to take part in it during his own 2nd trial !}. The Family was actually rarely stable and it's sometimes fluid nature was always going to reach that point where it was going to fizzle out. If ever a group self destructed, it was them. The Spahn fire was merely one small part of the picture. Murder is what really did for them.

  14. orwhut- the Hendrickson piece is more a cautionary tale about being SO OBSESSED WITH YOUR IP in life but leaving literally NO INSTRUCTIONS as to what should happen upon your death. Robert was odd but he was lovely, he was charming and smart. He does have children although I would not suggest they have his interests at heart, I have not been able to get Tobyann on the phone for a year. Really tragic tale

99.9% sure. He's right there on the famous "Earl Deemer List". Found him there a couple of years ago. Same name, same DOB.

Thank you for the reply. I believe it was you who mentioned that Mrs. Hendrickson suffered from dementia. If it affects her the way it did my mother she's in no condition to answer the phone and wishing she had an off switch. I wish Mrs. Hendrickson the best and appreciate you going to her house and letting us know what had happened to Robert.
