The mindset of people who do stupid things never ceases to amaze...imagine being those guys who went down with only scuba diving equipment on?! Kinda like marching off to ar with a cap pistol. The great unknown...I suppose the MF went down with a couple on buck knives and a Buntline Special! And, a rope...
When he refers to the MF members going into the water but reportedly saying it was too hot (and the narrator implies that it wasn't) the temperature IS,in fact, purportedly EXTREMELY HOT, and, that heat is noted as a specific environmental condition - that because of their survival in - makes the Death Valley Pupfish a unique species.
"The pupfish can withstand harsh conditions that would kill other fish: water that is 4 times more saline than the ocean, hot water up to 116 °F (47 °C), and cold water down to 32 °F (0 °C)"
