A Documentary That Keeps on Giving

The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles decided to program MANSON the award winning documentary by Robert Hendrickson on August 9, 2016, the Anniversary of these terrible murders that we all desperately study for answers. While seemingly an obvious idea, this was the first time anyone had done this and it was quite the event. The Col and his supermodel wife decided to attend and support Robert and his amazing wife Tobyann, having not seen their lovely faces in all that time. Max Frost, that astounding scholar of Mansonalia, also joined in the evening's events.

The Theatre owner, superstar director Quentin Tarantino had done the programming and it was kind of ingenious. Thanks to the, ahem, foibles of Robert, this film is almost never revived and is only available on homemade DVDS direct from the Hendrickson Estate. It was Tarantino's idea to book on that date. He intended to double feature it with a piece of shit film known as THE HELTER SKELTER MURDERS (bootlegs always available from Jon Aes-Nihil Enterprises for $24.99) but Robert was smart enough to hold out and say hell to the no. This let to MANSON being shown twice that evening- and selling out BOTH times. The primarily young and hipster audience lined up around the block for both showings and it was joyful to watch them embrace Robert as the talented filmmaker he is.

Tarantino sent a car for the Hendricksons to bring them to LA and we met them at El Coyote, where legend has it the Tate victims had their last meal (unlikely), where Matt and crew met Hendrickson lo these many years ago and where the food is meh and the margaritas too small. Col, Supermodel Wife and Max Frost were so happy to see Tobyann and Robert and it was nice to catch up and exchange war stories from the last few years. Several ideas were bandied about that IF They lead somewhere could be amazing.

Tobyann and Col's Wife. Robert holds court

Then it was over to the Theatre. The Marquee was a lovely touch

We arrived with 12 minutes left on the film. The Family was singing "Always is Always Forever" and walking down the dirt road at Spahn. Amazing to watch with a sold out crowd riveted at the screen. Even more impressive, since the 35 mm print (Tarantino is obsessed with "film") was faded and pink. Seriously, the DVD Robert sells is 100 times better quality. Then the man of the hour took the stage.

Robert is a great chat in person, a bit scattered on the blog but he was a fucking ROCK STAR in front of the crowd. He did a great job with about 30 minutes of questions. Some of the questions were even interesting. Tarantino asked a very smart question about Manson's culpability for the main 7 murders. Robert talked about Black Muslims and Merrick and there were a LOT more questions that went unaddressed. Leave them wanting more indeed.

Listen  to the Q&A session:

I checked out the audience and it was mostly young hipsters like I said. When we left the 10:30 show was the same type of audience. Quentin and the Col were probably the oldest people there after the Hendricksons. The usual crowd of experts like Adam Parfrey, counter culture groupies like Brian Butler and authors writing books for 17 years like Tom O'Neill were no where to be seen. (To be fair, O'Neill is in the middle of setting up a nationwide chain of Karate schools with Karate Dave using the teachings of Manson and Bruce Lee combined)

All in all an amazing evening a great event. All Hail ROBERT HENDRICKSON!!1

(apologies to all for the delay in this report, been busy blowing shit up)

Manson Tour 2015: Earth Day at Spahn Ranch

So, what if I told you that in one day I would fly cross country from Florida, get high at Spahn Ranch with a guy named Stoner Van Houten,  go out to dinner with The Col, and then bunk for the night with George Stimson?

Would you say that was a hell of a day? Welcome to Manson Tour 2015!

Yeah, thats right- a few extras tagged along this year. I guess it is not hard to imagine the emotions, and feelings I experienced yesterday. Safe to say I went through some changes of my own for sure. Day one of the Tour was on, and with special help from the legendary Michael Channels, Pete Porteous, and the aforementioned Stoner Van Houten, We got a first class look- and first hand account- of the history of Spahn Ranch and the surrounding area.

Personally, just pulling around the final corner and seeing the sign for Santa Susana Pass road, was about when I first started worrying if anyone else could notice I was scared shitless? But Patty, Julie, and Deb were along, so I sorta had to go through with it. I was glad I did. The rattlesnakes left us alone, and we left the poison oak alone, and we all ended up friends.

Dinner with Max Frost and the Col was an amazing experience. Along with George being there, I found myself sitting between the most informed and intelligent people who are intimately involved with the case. It was - even a time for a guy like me- to just sit back with a beer and listen. Some nights should never have to end.

But it did. So we went back to the place we are sharing and I finally passed out in a loft in the room above where my new friend George was sleeping. We have different views, but we shared a great day. I know in the coming days we will talk about some of these differences. I get a rare chance to learn, and hear the thoughts from both sides in a very intimate way. Wow what a concept- People on both sides, and with different views all coming together for a single purpose. For the next week. This is my family lol

The Last Supper and 10066 Cielo Drive

Apparently, Jon Aes Nihil has been hosting what he refers to as the Last Supper for the past 35 years at El Coyote. This year, Patty was lucky enough to get invited to sit with him, Matthew Roberts, Stoner van Houten and his roomie, Michael Channels, folks from the Museum of Death in Hollywood, "Uncle Paulie" from whatuphollywood.com (who worked for the LA Free Press in 1969) and a mysterious gentleman named "Ed" from Pennsylvania who refused to be photographed.

What a night. Of course, no one showed up on time for 6:30 cocktails (Jon Seger, where were you?). No one showed up on time for dinner either: Reservations were for 7pm, but nearly everyone waited until 8pm to make their appearances. The wait staff was freaking, Stoner was freaking, and Patty successfully resisted the urge to pop an Ativan. Once the table was full however, a good time was had by all as we passed books, photographs and an El Coyote baseball cap around the table to be signed.

By 9:30pm. the wait staff was again freaking. One of them came to the table, looked Patty square in the face and said, "There's a shit ton of people waiting for this table, its time to leave."  Stunned, Patty replied, "Well, I'm not in charge here." "Who is?," he asked?  Patty shrugged, so he stood further down the table and repeated his same line as if he'd been rehearsing it for a while. A gentleman at the table next to the Sharon Tate booth took Patty aside and offered to buy the whole table another round, just to piss dude off.  However, we complied. Michael Channels' video of the occasion can be seen here.

Cielo was next.  David Oman was hosting a party at his house that we were told was a paid event.  Patty didn't ask how much Oman charged per person to tell his ghost stories and serve Foster's on tap.

On the way out, Patty, Stoner and Stoner's roomie Dave Finkelberg noticed Scott Michaels coming up the hill with a group of very sober looking tourists who didn't say a word. Stoner walked up to him and introduced himself.  "Yeah, I've heard of you," he replied.

The next day, a friend of Patty's forwarded her a link from tmz.com: Oman is claiming that the ghost of Sharon Tate set off his fire alarm around midnight. Um...okay...
