Book of Manson (1989) Film

The Book Of Manson was released in 1989. The film is available to watch on Youtube but is broken into five sections. Part one is missing. I'd buy a copy if mine were the bank accounts of a university and not a dumb writer but life is what it is and I'll likely die without knowing what happens in part one. 

"The loose plot and bad production make it difficult to watch but it's very rewarding if you can stay on the ride." 

A reviewer named Ruiz wrote that about BoM seven years ago. You won't find many reviews online and Ruiz was succinct. 

Book of Manson is mucho irreverent in spades. Filmmaker Raymond Pettibon has the comedic timing of Roman Polanski. More than once, the thought crossed my mind that I was watching a Polanski treatment of the Manson family. Take that however you like. I went into the Polanski catalog expecting to confirm my dislike for the director but walked away with respect for his films. Not that I'd advise you to send your seventh grader to a pool party at his place. 

Pettibon is also the writer for BoM. His film is huge on dialogue and much of it is solid gold. A nuanced, punk rock, 80's, Manson family? The Marx Brothers crossed my mind several times but only if they were from the dark side or something Idk. 

You've heard for years that a California record label was set to release an album of Charles Manson's music in the 1980's but backed out after receiving threats. Filmmaker Pettibon's brother, Greg Ginn, is the owner of that label. I started asking around about the threats hoping someone would say, "Four huge guys in sweatsuits eating gabagool hopped out of a black Cadillac yelling, 'Bada bing we're the Mafia! Big Tony says no record, capeesh?"  

And if not the mob then who? Phil Kaufman? Doris Day? How would the public even know? The threats were confirmed but downplayed. "Nothing as serious as you might be thinking." 

Got it. Joke threats. So funny you don't put the record out. And don't think I would've either. I was terrified of Charles Manson in the 80's. Everyone "into" him was talking about the Process Church and not  ATWA down at the home place. 

Anyway. A couple of years after threats killed the record, Pettibon made BoM. Gutsy to say the least. 

The scene at Bobby's might be my favorite. Again nuance. Again irreverence. Janet Housden plays Mary Brunner. Gary asks Bobby, Sadie, and Mary if Charlie sent them. Bobby doesn't like Mary's affirmation, flexes on her, and announces he's running things. 

How many Gary arguments have taken place on this blog? Was it the Satans' money or an inheritance? Why did Mary tell Guenther and Whiteley they were after three grand?  

Here's my six degrees. I was pestering Henry Rollins with letters in 1991 while Joe Cole helped with his mail. Thirty years ago today, Cole was murdered by muggers in front of the house he shared with Rollins in the Oakwood neighborhood of Venice Beach, California. Rollins escaped by dodging bullets. 

This is Henry talking about Cole's killing. Rollins was the record label's point man with Manson. Joe Cole also worked at SST Records. I was over the moon when Cole's response showed up at my PO Box, and his awful death shook me. Even after they handed over fifty bucks, Cole was shot in the face at point blank range. 

Senseless, cruel, and sad. Joe Cole has been dead for almost as long as he lived. I won't ever understand why his death was necessary and wanted to drop a quick shoutout here today in remembrance. Some of you might remember Cole's killing and others will not. I don't drink anymore but if I did, I'd pour a little out for Joe. 

Robert Hecker's scenes as Charlie are magic imo. I went stalking him online and almost fell out of my chair so great was my haste to email blog reader Tobias Rabe. Hurdles!

Family Jams

Gorodish has shared his scans of the Family Jams CD with us.  Most people do not buy Manson's music even if the profit from that music does not go to any of those convicted.  Manson's and the Family's music is available to listen to online for free in various places.  What we don't get by listening to the music online are the goodies that might come with the production.

The Family Jams album is the most listenable, to me, out of the rather large catalog of music that has been produced since the arrests and convictions.  The tunes have a catchy quality in a simple folksy way.

"Never say never to always" on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina?!?

Fighting off boredom, I started watching "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" online. 

Turns out it's dark and clever w cool sets and art direction. As i watched Episode4, Season 1, about 7 minutes in, I was stunned to hear "Never say never to always" being sung by Sabrina's Witch Academy school choir and then by Sabrina herself, rather beautifully. 

Some of the words have changed though: "...no clothing, tears and hunger? instead of (I believe), ".. no cold, pain, fear, or hunger..." 

1st I thought : WHOA!,  That's cool!, then I thought I should post it on this blog.

I gotta say I love the melody of this song and it has a calming magnetic effect on me. 

I was also surprised to see how deeply Manson references have creeped (no pun intended) into popular culture. I'm sure the writers of TCAoS know what they are doing, as there are many references, both visual and written, to real life murderershorror movies and real life murderthe movie "Suspiria") Does anyone know of other subtle references to the "Family" aside from intentional films, crappy "Aquarius", snarky punk songs, etc? 

So I'm not excusing these vicious crimes, nor have I figured out the true motive, just thought I'd share something lighter, and not celebrity deathmatch.

Man's Son Guitar for sale!

Austin Ann is back from retirement, and ready for action! Family apologists.....so sorry, but you will probably hate me. For everyone else, Hola, ¿cómo estás? Moving on, we have a Manson (Barker Ranch era) guitar up for auction, if anyone is interested in throwing away an extra $10,000 to $15,000 for this historical piece of melody making kindling. Imagine.... being in death valley on a cold, windy night...frazzled & worn, hungry, thirsty, dusty & itchy, barefoot, sunburnt, and having to sit for hours on end listening to Manson's crazy crooning all night long! I don't even think "Look At Your Game, Girl" sounded as good as a hamburger sizzling on a grill at a 24 hour diner, which half of the morons out there were probably thinking of as he was doing his hourly yodeling.....But, as I have always said, "to each their own." CHARLES MANSON (b. 1934) Drifter whose "family" committed the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969. An outstanding, unique Manson relic, a dreadnought-style acoustic guitar owned and used by Manson at the Barker Ranch and seized by police following the killer's arrest. The guitar, 39" x 14 1/2", is a model ACL-IM manufactured in Japan by Camco. Manson has carved his surname into the top of the headstock. Attached to a tuning peg is a pair of property labels from the Inyo County, California Sherriff's Department, with one indicating that the guitar was seized from the Barker Ranch in Death Valley on October 12, 1969, the day of the raid on the ranch which resulted in the capture of Manson and his "family". The tag further notes that on Dec. 11, the guitar was transferred to the custody of LAPD detective Michael McGann, who investigated the assassination Robert F. Kennedy before becoming the lead detective working on the Tate murders. Before his capture, Manson had been an aspiring folk musician and in an effort to promote his career, he befriended Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson in 1968. This guitar was undoubtedly used by Manson to compose, practice, and likely record his music, as well as to entertain his 'Family' members at the Barker Ranch. Many speculate that the real target of Manson's rage was record producer Terry Melcher, who had refused to sign Manson and had earlier rented the home occupied by Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. The guitar is unstrung, and shows small nicks, chips, dents, and scratches throughout, else very good.

Henry Rollins on those Charles Manson tapes

Below is an abridged version of an abridged version of an interview with Henry Rollins, on playing a vampire, the indignities of auditions, his relationship to radio and what happened with all that Charles Manson music business. Aside from the promo clip below from "He Never Died", I only re-posted the section dealing with Manson music:

There's a film called "Manson Family Vacation" [which played at SXSW] and it touches on Charles Manson's music career and about the draw to the myth and the man. You had been involved with some of his musical output in the 1980s…

Well let's frame it correctly. His attorney sent SST Records – I'm not an owner, I just work there, SST and Touch & Go and every other indie label -- a copy of a C90 and a C60 of Manson playing at Vacaville [Prison].

All the labels passed. SST didn't. Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski said yes to the project. There was no one there to edit it, everyone's busy. And I said "I'll do it." I put on the tapes and listened. It's good! Like there's an album here of acoustic folky bluesy scat improv vocal music.

I write Charles Manson a very Boy Scoutish letter. "I read Helter Skelter in ninth grade so I'm aware of your career." I said "I'm your editor and I've been working on edits. I'm going to fade in and fade out. I have a 35 minute record. I think it's good." Like, I'm your editor. Not a producer because the tracks were produced in a prison cell.

And he wrote me back immediately. "I've seen you on MTV, man. You and I look alike. We're brothers of a different time." I'm like okay, he's trying to get in my head.

And I had this correspondence with him that lasted from ‘84 to 1987. And like I have letters, photographs, maps, drawings, things he'd make me out of yarn. Crazy stuff. But the record got as far as the six test pressings. Word of the record came out, the L.A. Times got a hold of it. We started getting the most incredible death threats. Like, "Here's your address and I will cut your head off if you put this record out." And "I know you practice here. You live here and you walk this way to practice." I'm like wow, this is real.

I wanted to put the record out. I said screw these guys – let's do it. Greg and Chuck cancelled it.

Manson took it all out on me, like "I knew you'd rip me off!" He called me a bunch of names. I tried to explain the cult politicism of SST Records and our stated station in L.A. I tried and he's like "No, you ripped me off. The Beach Boys ripped me off. All you guys…" – All kinds of language.

Yeah, he just flipped out on me. I'm like, "Charlie, it's not me. I'm on the label but I'm not the label." You can't explain something like that to a guy like that. I did the best I could and finally, on the last letter he cooled out a little so I think he did have a moment to… I said it's not me. It's Frank and Chuck and they're afraid they're going to get cut up. I said fuck it, let's just put it out.

The last letter I ever got from him he said okay, we're cool. And then I never heard from him again. And so it's not my property. It's not even SST's. They dropped it.

So it belongs to Charlie I guess. A good record. It's been bootlegged. It's out. I called it "Completion" from his poem he sent me. And if you type in "Manson Completion" [in a search], that's because that's the edited tape. It made the rounds and I've seen it online. In fact, I've seen a CD of it. And so you can find it. Of the six test presses, I have two. So that's probably the rarest thing from it. But it'll never be released by SST, I doubt it. But it's out there, it's around.

Other labels have put out his music.

Yes, quite a bit. He sent me about 40 hours of stuff that I'm sitting on. The album, though, is from only the two tapes. But his lawyer is like "Well Charlie wanted you to have this" and it's these books of cassettes. I'm like "Thanks." I've played some of them. Some of the sound quality just sounds like a bunch of people in a prison just slamming doors. But I have many hours of Manson that he gave me.

Would you like to put that into the world?

Well it's not mine. And I'm very – I'm proprietary of other people's stuff, in that it does not belong to me. It is not mine to put out. How dare I. And people give me stuff all the time. I've got rare music like you've got hair on your head. The kind of stuff like, that I shouldn't have, like this never happened. All kinds of music that's never gone anywhere because I promised I wouldn't play it.

I know what's mine and what's not mine and I don't betray. Like, you could give me a million dollars and leave. Come back in 20 years, I go "You left this." I'm not going to rip you off. I'm just not that guy. It's been done to me. I don't want to do it to someone else.

I have a big music archive, a lot of things that I have one of a kind, cover artwork, correspondence. I buy estates, you know, like if a guy dies, I'm like, "Are you going to sell that?"

You need a house for that, right?

Well it takes the capacity of a three story building, all the stuff.

So anyway I'm very honest with all that stuff and so the Manson stuff, that's up to him and his people. I haven't been in touch with the guy for 30 years or so, so I don't know what his life is like.

The Curious Case of Brooks Poston

I had finished editing Manson Family Movies in 1984, minus the soundtrack. I was living in Encino and saw that Brooks & Jane were playing in Venice so naturally I went to see them. I figured I was the only one in the audience who knew who Brooks was in relation to Manson. Between sets we talked and I told him I had made a Manson movie that was in some ways a comedy due mainly to being made with no money. He thought that was a good approach. I also told him I was working on the soundtrack and he said "I recorded some of Charlie's songs you could possibly use." So I got his number. When I tried calling the number a few days later it did not work.

The next time I ran into Nick Bougas I told him the story, and he said he would work on locating Brooks. As it turned out, Nick was living in Burbank and so was Brooks, so Nick told him he was really interested in his music and arranged a meeting. He was able to score one of the audio tapes that Brooks and Jane had put out, but claimed that Brooks was adamant that he never recorded any of Charlie's music, and that he never said he had.

Nick made me a copy of the tape that he got and gave me Brooks' number, so I called him. I told him how we met and reminded him of what he had said, and again he denied ever having said that he recorded any of Charlie's music. I told him that I would like to get a copy of the other tape he put out, so he said to send him like $5 and he would send me one, which he did. Sometime later Nick told me that Brooks and Jane had joined some other cult and fled L.A. because their new cult leader told them that "L.A. would fall in the ocean."  

Many years later Nick moved to Georgia and I talked to him maybe once a year rather than all the time. Several years later I heard a rumor that Paul Watkins was talking to Nick on the phone, who recorded the call, and that Paul said that he had never turned on Charlie and that the Bug told him, as well as many others involved with Manson, that if they did not say in court what he told them to say that he would charge them with accessory to first degree murder. I wanted to hear this call so I called Nick but he denied any knowledge of it. I told him I had heard otherwise. He then said he had a flood in his basement, and since he had so much stuff he may have had it but it most likely got destroyed.

More years went by. I ran into [a prominent TLB scholar] at a flea market and he told me he had paid a lot of money for the original tapes of Brooks and Jane's music, and that Nick's girlfriend told him to not buy from me because I had crappy copies of this music. I had always been good friends with her and Nick, so now what's up? I told this man that Nick got one tape directly from Brooks and I got the other one directly from Brooks, and that Nick had made my copy off of the one that he had, so this "bad quality story" was some sort of con or who knows what.

Even more years pass and it is now close to the present time. Some guy turns up selling CDs of about 15 concerts and studio recordings of a band I never knew existed called Desert Sun comprised of Brooks, Jane, Paul and this other guy. The amazing thing is they HAD recorded a number of Charlie's songs!  It was obvious that this band was into Charlie as they recorded a number of his songs live and in studio. Furthermore Paul did a song explaining his present feelings toward Charlie, basically saying that he was still with him but they had gone different ways.  This band seems to have existed from 1972 on however I'm not sure when it ended.

I have been involved in ways with the Manson case since I first heard of it in 1969 following Altamont in November 1969, which I attended. When the case broke in December 1969 I was all over it. From 1971 and onward for the next several years I was Hitch Hiking on the Road and immediately ran into a number of people and we stayed together for years as a sort of Family. We were quite aware of the parallels with the Manson situation. The reason I mention that is because if I had known of this band's existence back then, I definitely would have gone to their concerts.

Another CD in this collection is called Hello Nick and it is a 40 minute message from Paul to Bougas. I was finally able to hear it recently. This was not the rumored phone call between Nick and Paul regarding Paul's being coerced by the Bug into testifying against Charlie in court. So perhaps the recording of that phone call actually was drowned in Nick's basement? Then again I did hear from someone years ago regarding the gist of the call. So someone somewhere has a copy.

I also found out recently that the mysterious new cult leader that Brooks and Jane fled with was Paul Crockett. It was around 1984 or 1985 as that's when Nick lost track of them and they were no longer living in Burbank. They had all moved to Washington.

Even more recently I heard that Crockett had died so now what is Brooks to do?

The 1st 200 albums are Limited Edition's that will include items such as clothing worn by Charlie, his guitar picks, guitar strings, guitar parts, loads of obscure stamps, some poems signed by Charlie, post cards, and much more.

Every one of the 1000 albums will have a heavy 24 page glossy 12 x 12 book in them, including letters from Red to CM from the early 80's, never before seen photos of Charlie, and loads of never before seen items that I have in my collection.

There is an amazing new NY-based "Charles Manson concept band" that claims to be a new component of the Manson Family.  They seem incredibly well versed in the intricacies of the case (going so far as to assert that they have "the little black book" that Leno LaBianca allegedly possessed, thereby hinting at their support of that theory/motive) and their songs are all centered around the events that transpired.  I personally think it is some sort of postmodern performance art project but I can't speak for them; I suppose it is possible that they genuinely believe as it says on their site that "Charles Manson is Jesus Christ."

Manson Family Remixes

The Manson Family epitomises everything dark and dangerous about psychedelia, the potentially disastrous consequences of drug abuse and misled ideals. When they weren’t hacking up pregnant women or trying to incite race wars they had some pretty adorable jamming sessions. That’s assuming  you find chanting and cackling adorable. That’s perhaps a reckless assumption to make. On second thoughts we didn’t mean it, we take it back. Assumption revoked.

Point being that despite all the creepiness there’s a genuine warmth in their demo tapes. Everything is totally untouched production wise and reeks of ominous euphoria. We sent these tapes to a handful of our favourite up and coming producers, DJs and bands and asked them to have a fiddle around to see what they could come up with. Here’s the results in all their messianic, homicidal glory.

 I noticed on their website two familiar names starring in the movie-Val Kilmer and Lea Thompson.
The site is not 100% finished.   Yet there is a trailer and shots of premier posters.

 Synopsis
In the summer of 1969, Jenna, a rebellious fifteen-year old girl, abandoned by her deadbeat single mom, steals a horse from her best friend's family and runs away from their loving arms.
Her naive and very square best friend follows her on another horse and the two girls stumble across the Manson family living in an abandoned movie ranch.
Jenna, a street-smart budding singer-songwriter, is not fooled by their talk of peace, love and living free, but her sweet and innocent friend is gradually seduced by their siren call. The situation gets dangerous, but Jenna stands her ground against the infamous Charlie, Bobby and Tex and is forced to make a great and heroic personal sacrifice to save her friend from a horrific night with the wanton members of "the family."

Pretty face lives halfway between fact and fiction, blending factual details about the day-to-day existence of the Manson family in the weeks leading up to the infamous murders with the fictional coming of age story of a damaged, crass, but ultimately loving, teenage heroine.

There is not much info about this movie, just rumors.  The only description I can find is,the movie follows the Manson Family through their trail of carnage.
Tyler Shields is producing as well as starring as Charlie.  I think he wrote it as well.  Shields is a celebrity photographer and a good friend of Lindsay Lohan.  According to gossip, shooting will start July 15, 2010. 
But-  Linsay Lohan has court at the end of this month.  There is the potential she might have to serve some prison time for her habitual kleptomania.  If that happens, she will be replaced.   Marilyn Manson is rumored to be playing Tex.

Update on Manson Girls- I spoke to Susanna again a few days ago.  They are currently shooting in L.A. and Puerto Rico.  I mentioned some rumors going around that her movie would not be made.  She assured me it is being made as we speak.

"I will be making my directorial debut from a script I wrote," Kosar told STYD.  "The movie won't focus on the Manson murders.  Nor is it a Manson biopic.  It's a family biopic.  A movie about a surrogate family of wayward teenagers who, through extraordinary circumstances, came together and were transformed into the most notorious American family of the 20th century.  Hence the title"
He continued: "it is not a horror film, though the subject is inherently horrific.  The goal is to do, finally,after forty years, the first authentic film about the so-called Manson Family.  Unlike other films on the subject, 'The Family' will also spend time getting to know the victims, particularly Sharon Tate, who will be portrayed very sympathetically.  This won't be a slasher film, but it won't gloss over the violence either.  My film will concern the family itself.  Who they were and what their lives were like with Manson."

The film will take on the case of singer Bobby Fuller, (I fought the law) whose death, though ruled a suicide,raised suspicion of foul play and potentially murder.  The script, which is yet to be written, will focus on the allegations that Manson and his family were behind the murder.  Michael C. Hall will pay one of Fullers managers, while Melissa Leo takes on the role of a former Manson family member.
