Some begin to connect the dots

Around early June of 1968 several Family members traveled up to the Mendocino area to look for possible locations to resettle. Among them were Bobby Beausoleil, Mary Brunner, Susan Atkins, Stephanie Rowe, Ella Jo Bailey and Patricia Kerenwinkel. The group stayed at a house off Route 28 near Philo. They were arrested on multiple drug charges after giving LSD to a group of local kids. At their trial (in September of '68), they were nicknamed the Witches of Mendocino.

On October 13, 1968, two women were found beaten and strangled to death near Ukiah, California. One, Clida Dulaney, was the 8 months pregnant wife of a CHP officer. The other victim, Nancy Warren, was Dulaney's 64-year-old grandmother. The murders were ritualistic in nature, with 36 leather thongs wrapped around each victim’s throat.

Many, including former Inyo County District Attorney Frank Fowles were certain that the Family had murdered the women to retaliate for the harassment they received as a result of their drug activity and subsequent arrests and convictions.

Patty thinks the target was Clyda's husband. He was a CHP on special detail; he was in Sacramento the night of the murders attending a "special training program." His wife and mother were murdered as a warning to him to mind his own business. Clyda's three children from her first marriage were asleep at the time, and were not harmed because The Family likes kids.

So Officer Dulaney had direct contact with the group? Is there someplace I can read about it? I understand he was twice his wife's age. That would put him around 90 now if he's still alive.

I really am on the fence about these murders. If people believe the "Manson ordered the murders" theory, then it's hard to imagine that Manson sort of abandon Susan and the gang while in Mendocino. The leather thong on the neck is a pretty interesting similarity, though. No matter what, people die everywhere and a lot go unsolved. The fact that everywhere the Family went, dead bodies followed is also interesting but it can also be coincidence. I bet if any of us went there and asked around we could find Officer Dulaney if he is still alive.

Manson, himself has admitted that he gave Tex instructions. Of course, he tries to NOW say that his words were misconstrued, and taken out of context. There is one group of people who think Manson is just a misunderstood dude who got the shaft from the Bugliosi, and then there is another group that thinks he is responsible for a number of murders in the California area in the late 60's. I am of the opinion that he DID tell Tex to go to Melcher's old place and wreak havoc. Those people didn't fart without permission from CM, much less go out, and commit murder on their own. Remember, they were trying to gather as much money as they could to get OUT of town fast!

The murder of 15 year old Mark Walts.....shot to death summer '69 in Topanga does have direct connections to the Spahn Ranch.

Mark frequented the ranch.
His brother even went to Spahn and confronted/threatened Manson over his brothers death.

This murder seems way too close to home to not be connected.
DeCarlo says "they" didn't have anything to do with it.
If that lying sack of Straight Satan said down I'd look up.

Bobby and Sadie had difficulty killing Gary. I don't think they killed before that.

Patty doesn't necessarily think it was The Family, but it was probably someone with Family contacts. There was a huge network of drug smuggling all p and down the coast. Patty still has much research to do but she is beginning to think that The Family was part of something much larger.

It seems to be a reprint of an earlier collection of writings that I was unaware of except for the title essay. The ad text promises an up to date bio so that should be interesting. I have ordered a copy and if there is anyting new I will post it.

So many of them have blood on their hands even if they did not murder anyone they most likely know about the ones that were done.Just wondering why one of them has not come forward.
