Ruth Ann Moorehouse and Edward "Ted" Heuvelhorst

We were aware that in 1968 Ruth Ann Moorehouse married Edward Heuvelhorst so she could be an emancipated minor and not need to answer to her parents and she would no longer be a minor in the eyes of the law. Ruth Ann was 16 years old and Edward was 23 years old.

The story of their marriage as I understood it was that Ruth Ann married Edward and left him at the altar. It was a marriage of convenience for Ruth Ann but not necessarily for Edward. The two were married May 20th 1968 in Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz County, California. It has been said that she hitchhiked back down to Los Angeles and to the Family the same day she married, leaving Edward behind.

Who was Edward Heuvelhorst?

Searching through records I was surprised at the couple of things I found about Edward. Edward Lewis Heuvelhorst, Jr. went by the nickname of Ted, nobody called him Edward. He was born in Michigan and grew up in Holland Michigan according to his obituary. Holland Michigan is where Ella Jo Bailey was from, she was about a year and a half younger than Ted. However, I was not able to find Ted in any high school yearbooks for schools in Holland.

Ted’s mother, Mary Heuvelhorst, taught school in Holland MI beginning in the 1950’s but his father lived in Grand Rapids MI. I surmise that Ted’s parents were separated or divorced. BTW Ted’s mother’s maiden name was Good but I didn’t find a connection to Sandy Good.

Edward Lewis “Ted” Heuvelhorst Jr., is a distinctive and unusual name. The only other person with that name in the US according to Ancestry .com was his father with Sr. as a suffix. I found Ted in the 1962 and 1963 Ottawa Hills High School, Grand Rapids Michigan, yearbooks for his sophomore and junior years. Then I found Ted in a 1964 Menlo-Atherton High School yearbook. That high school is located in Atherton CA and today it is one of the wealthiest zip codes in the US. It was a very ritzy area back in the 1960’s too.

I was not able to learn why Ted came to California for his senior year of high school. Ted did stay in California after graduating from high school. I found a city directory listing for him living in Palo Alto and working for a construction company.

The next thing I found on Ted was a mention of his name in an April 26, 1968 article from the Ukiah Daily Journal in Mendocino County. The article was about some hippies putting on festival at the fairgrounds in Ukiah, naming it the 1st Annual Calvin Coolidge Day Fair. I have no idea why that name, I couldn’t find that the April 27th date had any connection to Coolidge. Ted was mentioned because he was shoved by someone standing in the fairgrounds office and he went to the police department to report it.

Hmmm, Mendocino County, Brooks Poston was mentioned in an ad taken out by one of the followers of Jim Jones extolling the reverend’s virtues that was published May 5, 1968. Rev. Jones made a deal with Brooks that if Brooks would get his hair cut, Jones would attend a non-violent peace march with Brooks.

Deane Moorehouse was in Mendocino during that time frame, too. And towards the end of May 1968 or early June 1968 five of the Manson Family girls rented a house in Philo, up the road from Boonville, just over the hill from Ukiah. It’s possible that Ruth Ann met Ted in Mendocino County.

It does not appear that Ted ever remarried or had any children.

Ruth Ann Morehouse 1975 address in Sacramento, CA

Sacramento Bee
October 8 1975

Sacramento police yesterday arrested Charles Manson follower Ruth Ann Morehouse, 22,  on a number of charges including burglary and conspiracy to commit murder.

Miss Morehouse, known to the Manson followers as "Ouisch," was arrested at an apartment at 2453 Rio Linda Blvd. and served with the Los Angeles warrant. She offered no resistance.

The FBI said today that her Sacramento address was learned during investigations following Miss Fromme's alleged attempt to assasinate President Ford.

In 1971, Miss Morehouse was convicted of feeding an overdose of LSD in a hamburger to a prosecution witness in the Tate-La Bianca murder trial.  The prosecution in that case said Miss Morehouse, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, Catherine "Gypsy" Share, Steven Grogan and Dennis Rice lured Manson family member Barbara Hoyt to Honolulu and fed her the LSD to keep her from testifying against Manson.

Nine months pregnant, she disappeared before her four codefendants, including Miss Fromme, were sentenced to 90 days in jail.

The manager of the apartment complex where she was arrested said Miss Morehouse had lived there since April 18.  She had given the name Ruth Fowler and was living with two small children and a man who identified himself as Ray Bones.

Asked if he had ever seen Miss Fromme or her roommate Sandra Good at the apartment, the manager said, "They haven't had any visitors like that."

He said "They didn't leave the apartment that much. I never saw anything unusual."

Prior to coming to Sacramento, Miss Morehouse had been living in the Carson City, Nev. area, authorities said. Investigators in the Tate-LaBianca case apparently had known of her whereabouts then but didn't think it was worth trying to extradite her.

Miss Morehouse joined the Manson Family when she was 15 years old. According to Manson prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's book, Helter Skelter, her father, Dean Morehouse, went to Spahn Ranch to kill Manson for stealing his daughter. "He ended up on his knees worshiping him."

She is expected to be transferred to Los Angeles later Today or Tomorrow.

Ruth Ann's Sacramento Arrest

Ex-Manson girl Tells of Quitting 'Family'
Says She Didn't Appear for Sentencing Because of Pregnancy

By William Farr

Ruth Ann Morehouse, still wearing a bandage over plastic surgery she underwent to remove the forehead X that had marked her as a member of the Manson family, Tuesday made a brief and tearful court appearance in Los Angeles.

"She has divorced herself from the Manson family for some time now," her attorney, Paul Fitzgerald, told Superior Court Judge David Fitts.

Morehouse was brought to court from Sacramento, where she was arrested a week ago on a four year old warrant issued while Charles Manson was on trial for the Sharon Tate-Leno La Bianca murders.

Known as "Ouish" to other members of Manson's cult, she initially was charged with conspiracy to commit murder for her part in what came to be known as the "Honolulu hamburger caper."

Four other members of the "family," including Lynette (Squeaky) Fromme, who is now awaiting trial for allegedly attempting to assassinate President Ford, were codefendants in the conspiracy case.

According to the county grand jury indictment against them, the group of Manson followers persuaded Barbara Hoyt to fly to Honolulu with Morehouse in October, 1970.

Morehouse reportedly spiked a hamburger with LSD before giving it to Hoyt for consumption.  the whole plan purportedly was to keep Hoyt from testifying at the Manson trial.

All five were allowed to plead no contest March 23, 1971, to the lesser charge of conspiracy to dissuade a witness, and the murder counts were dropped.  The other four received 90-day jail sentences April 16 of that year but Morehouse did not show up for sentencing.
With Morehouse at his side, unsuccessfully trying to fight back her tears, Fitzgerald told Fitts that she did not appear for sentencing because she was nine months pregnant at the time.
"The 'family' told her she had to shave her head and that she had to have her baby in jail." Fitzgerald explained "And she wanted none of that."
Instead she left to live with her sister in Carson City, Nev. and four days after her arrival there had the baby, Fitzgerald said.  In the interim between now and then, she married a Reno builder, had another child and recently was divorced.
Fourteen months ago, according to Fitzgerald, she moved to Sacramento but did not rejoin Manson followers Fromme and Sandra Good who also lived in the capitol city.
Fromme and Good called Morehouse's sister several times in Nevada and insisted that Morehouse had to come back with the 'family', Fitzgerald said.
The FBI found Morehouse's sister in Carson City and the sister informed the federal agents Morehouse was in Sacramento.
The FBI did not arrest her but did inform Sacramento authorities who subsequently picked her up on the long-standing warrant last Wednesday.
Fitts said he wanted and up-to-date probation report on Morehouse and set her bail at $1000.00 pending a November probation and sentencing hearing.  She was released later in the day after a member of her family posted the bond.
On November 4, 1975 Ruth Ann again appeared in court to be sentenced.  Judge Fitts did not give Ruth Ann any jail time, instead he ruled that because she was abandoned by her father when she was 14 years old and "thrown willy-nilly into the Manson cult" she could go free with time served.  She intended to go back to Minneapolis to live with her mother.

Email from Ruth Ann Moorehouse to Bill Nelson?

Back in the day this was posted on Bill Nelson's
(now defunct) website "mansonmurders.com".

 ---------------------------

Bill—

I have just been to your website and read the page about me.  I wanted to write and express my feelings on this matter.  I would also like for you to publish this letter on your website as a sort of "my story" type of thing.  I realize it is your website and you are free to publish whatever you want.  I also would like to thank you for not releasing any information that you have about me.

---------------------------

I have been living a quiet life for the past 30 years.  I have been blessed well beyond what I have deserved.  I have a great husband who I adore, a job I love, and sons who are my whole being.  But there have been many tragedies along the way.  I am not trying to make anyone feel sorry for me, I am merely trying to "set the stage" for what has become of my life.

I received my first email from Bill back in July.  I admit that it hit me out of the blue.  I had seen his website and had also seen him interviewed on television.  I didn't know what to expect.  I hadn't talked about those years of my life for a long, long time.  Indeed, my own children don't know my history.  I have been up front with them about the drug use and basically told them I lived in a "commune". They have no idea I was with Manson.

I tried to explain to Bill my reluctance to "speak out" because it had been so long.  I have been living quietly with this for almost thirty years.  Old habits are hard to break.  For a moment put yourself in my shoes.  Have you ever tried to explain to a plastic surgeon why you have an ‘X' on your forehead in the first place? I have had all these feelings bottled up tight for many years.  I have been to professional counseling for years.  I can't talk to my friends about it.  Real friends will understand?  Wrong!  I know from firsthand experience that is not the case.  I have tried "opening up" before and have had people (special people) walk out of my life because of it.  Welcome to my life.

I told Bill this story.  I live in a VERY small town. One cold night, I couldn't sleep.  I flipped on the TV and there happened to be a Sharon Tate movie (DON'T MAKE WAVES) showing.  I cried the rest of the night.  I think about it all the time.  Not a day goes by when I don't think back wishing the whole thing was some awful dream.  But it wasn't a dream.  I know that.  I can't change it, although I would if I could.

Barbara Hoyt.  I think about her and wish that there was something I could do to ease her pain.  What I did was despicable.  I am ashamed.  But again, I can't take back something I did 30 years ago. The reason I never apologized to Barbara through email to Bill is quite simple.  I can't fully express my feelings in words.  I feel it is something that needs to be done face to face.  At this time however, Bill has told me that Barbara doesn't want some type of overly emotional reunion to be blasted all over the talk shows. I feel the same way.  Like I said, I think about Barbara on a daily basis.  What happened with her has kept me up nights for 30 years thinking about what could have been a very tragic outcome.  I am truly sorry.

After reading Bill's website update about me, I felt compelled to give my side of the story.  Bill has been getting a bad rap on the message boards and I probably shouldn't have "popped off" the way I did.  As far as I know, he hasn't spilled any information about me. Basically, everything happened too fast for me.  Much too fast. I wanted to set the record straight and give insight into my decision to do what I did.

---------------------------

OK Bill.  What do you think?  Can you publish that letter in full?  I picked up the ball in my court and have passed it to you.

Ruth

More on "the missing link"

If you have not read Part 1 of this series, it is located HERE.

Patty has a sneaking suspicion that PJ Tate actually DID know what happened at Cielo in August of 1969, but that he couldn't do or say anything about it, because there was a federal investigation going on into the workings of The Brotherhood of Eternal Love (aka "The Hippie Mafia" or BEL). Up until a few years ago, nobody talked much about this huge federal investigation because it was, and perhaps still is to some extent, being actively pursued.

Supposedly, the federal investigation into the BEL is "wrapping up" now: The last BEL-related arrest was Brenice Lee Smith (pictured at right) in 2009. Another member was recently located near Lake Tahoe, but since he is a "family man" and has stayed out of trouble for many decades, he was not prosecuted.

You probably know that Colonel Tate was retired, but that he had been fairly high up in army intelligence. There is a passage in Restless Souls where Alisa Statman writes that PJ staked out Cielo for weeks until some "bikers" showed up and taunted the dogs there from behind the fence. PJ then purportedly followed them back to Spahn Ranch. Why didn't PJ go any further with his investigation? He had suspects, he had experience, he had connections. Patty does not wish to trivialize his pain: she has only the greatest respect and admiration for this man whom she never met. Surely, he must have been PISSED: Sharon's acquaintances' involvement with drugs put her in the worst possible place at the exact wrong moment in time. Because he was a man of honor, he would not have been able to divulge details to which he may have become privy if indeed a federal investigation was ongoing. Viewed in this cold, hard fluorescent light, the look on Colonel Tate's face (above, left) screams "monkey trial" to Patty.

In 1972, there was a large law enforcement conference in a "hotel ballroom" somewhere in San Francisco, according to Tendler & May's BEL and Schou's Orange Sunshine. At this conference, a list of 750 known associates of the BEL is said to have been revealed. These associates were loosely organized into maybe 40 separate distributorships up and down the coast. Where is that list now? Perhaps lead investigator and professional creepy crawler Neil Purcell has a copy of the list, because he was supposedly there. Neil was not only instrumental in breaking up BEL operations in California, he is also the officer who arrested Tim Leary, his wife and his son Jack on 12/26/68 in Laguna Beach. The Learys were in possession of a rather small amount of weed for which Tim was sentenced to ten years in prison. You know the rest of that story, right? Anyhow, that list may end up being the holy grail if Patty can find a copy.

It was this document that Patty was searching for when she found copies of the 1972 and 1974 US Senate Hearings on the "Marijuana and Hashish Epidemic," instead. Patty was interested to learn that the BEL was heavily involved in a passport fraud operation in order to mask their comings and goings abroad. This, the hearings read, was confirmed by Interpol, who once investigated Bruce Davis' presence in London at the time of Joel Pugh's death (above). This statement in the Interpol letter caught Patty's eye: "The local police...understand that he has visited our country more recently than April, 1969. However, this is not borne out by our official records." Interesting, no? Patty was also interested to learn that Bruce (pictured below in 1961) was also an early adopter of LSD, as per his parole hearing from October 4, 2012:

"PRESIDING COMMISSIONER FERGUSON: And you say other psychedelic drugs, did you use LSD?
INMATE DAVIS: I started in 1965.
...PRESIDING COMMISSIONER FERGUSON: Other psychedelic drugs as well?
INMATE DAVIS: Mescaline...Psilocybin.
...PRESIDING COMMISSIONER FERGUSON: Okay...You've mentioned hallucinogens, how about depressants or stimulants?
INMATE DAVIS: Very seldom. Sometimes some stimulants.
PRESIDING COMMISSIONER FERGUSON: What kind, like cocaine?
INMATE DAVIS: No. Methamphetamine."

These are the drugs that Patty was talking about in her first post, which bring us back to Gary, and to Patty's stalker having another cow. Why have the 48 color photographs associated with the investigation into Gary's murder (here) been lost to us? CieloDrive has promised to keep his eyes peeled for the photos, but at last report, there has been nothing. WHY?

Patty believes that drugs figure very heavily into the overall motive, and apparently Sandy Good does too. Friend of the blog "Giselle" found Sandy's old ATWA site on the wayback machine (see here). Sandy, pictured above right with an (evil-)lizard, stated on her website as late as 2000 that although "seriously flawed," the Shreck book is the closest account to what really happened. The Shreck book is very pro drug motive, as you know.

Kimchi at lsb3.com shared that the LASD arrest report of 5/2/68 states that "Suspect Good was again shown evidence held item #1, #2, #3 and #4 and asked if it was hers, suspect stated, no, never saw it before. When asked if she smokes marijuana suspect stated, yes, but I don't like it. When asked where she got the capsules, suspect stated from Gary Hinman in Topanga.(see here)." Is it a coincidence that Tex and Sadie had a baby food jar full of white powdery speed at Spahn right after Gary's murder, which Tex wrote about in his book, "Will you die for me?" It wasn't in the form of pills (aka "reds"), it was POWDER. The stuff Sandy said came from Gary was also powder in a capsule, not pressed. Gary was an amateur and would not have had a pill press like the one at left, which was recovered from an actual MDMA lab. Was the "speed" in the baby food jar methamphetamine (trade name methedrine), an MDA precursor that Sadie got from Gary's basement?

It is very interesting to Patty that places that the Family have been known to frequent parallel places where the BEL had business at around the same times. Family members were driving up and down the coast all the time, Mexico to Canada. Perhaps not so coincidentally, Phil Kaufman who wrote Road Mangler Deluxe states that he met Manson at Terminal Island, where he was serving time for smuggling marijuana from Mexico. At one time Charlie gave Kaufman's "Joint Venture" address as his own, when he applied for a Union Oil Company credit card (see here).

It is also Phil who was with Graham Parsons when he died in Joshua Tree. Phil stole Graham's body to burn it near Joshua Tree rather than let him be buried at home in New Orleans (see here). Joshua Tree was also home to a large commune that Onjya Sipe stayed at (see here), as did a woman who told Nicholas Schou that she saw Charles Manson at a Haight-Ashbury free Diggers' kitchen called "The Living Room."

The guy who was the main BEL cook around the time of the murders was Nick Sand, a Brooklynite who jumped bail and ended up in Canada. Furthermore, Pic Dawson was a purported drug dealer from Canada. In the Robert Ackerley clip, he says that he never intended to end up in the Haight, because he and a friend were originally driving to Canada. (as an aside: He also mentions hanging out with Eric Clapton in the Haight. This blog has a photo of Clapton at Cass' house, eating BBQ next to Pic Dawson: see here).

Ruth Ann was either travelling with or picking up on Hawaii a large amount of LSD at the time she dosed Barbara's hamburger. We know she disappeared and left Barbara in her hotel for several hours before she returned, then high tailed it back to the airport. The BEL was there at the same time, dealing acid and creating what later became known as "Maui Wowie." Did Ruth Ann bring the acid with her in a premotivated plan to murder Barbara, or was it an offhanded stunt she pulled in the process of picking up or dropping off some sort of shipment? (Hey Stoner, the bong babe is for you). If this was the case, it is entirely possible that Barbara was brought along as an unwitting, disposable "mule."

Clyda Dulaney was murdered in Ukiah, halfway between where the Witches of Mendocino were living in Navarro and where the BEL relocated to from the Haight (namely, Potter's Valley). Who is/was Johnny's "weird aunt," who may know what actually happened according to Johnny himself (see here)? And what about Santa Barbara? and Malibu? and Oregon? and Mexico? and San Diego? and Esalen? And....a bunch of other places that come up again and again? Stay tuned, because of course, THERE'S MORE.

Nicknames

Ken's previous post reminded me of something. During an interview with Stephanie Schram on Brian Davis' site, Star City Radio (link below). Stephanie mentioned everything happened so long ago she can't remember all of it.

You might remember Dianne Lake contacted me back in August. Since then, Dianne and I have kept in contact with each other. She has gone on to lead a much deserved normal life, marrying and having three children and beautiful grandchildren.

Like Stephanie, while questioning Dianne, there were also a few things she could not remember.

It was over 40 years ago. Shit, I personally can't remember stuff that happened last week.

I asked Dianne if the girls came with their nicknames or were they bestowed upon them by certain people as we have read. Dianne offered me what she could recall and her permission to share it with the blog.

Since she could not remember 100 percent, Matt did not consider it blog worthy, but I do.

I really, really hope Matt does not fire me for posting this.

Dianne- a.k.a."Snake." - It was while we were living on Summit Trail and the weather was very hot. While sitting with Lynn and Sandy, I imagined myself as a snake slithering through the cool, tall green grass. I shared my thoughts with Lynn and Sandy who in turn told the others. From that day on I was called Snake."

Lynn- a.k.a. "Squeaky" - Lynn's laughter sounded like a "squeak." George Spahn found her squeaky laugh amusing and gave her the nickname "Squeaky."

Ruth Ann- a.k.a. "Ouish" - One of the children could not pronounce Ruth Ann. It would come out sounding like "ouish". From then on Ruth Ann was called "Ouish."

Cathy Gillies a.k.a. "Cappy"

Cahterine Share a.k.a-"Gypsy" both girls arrived already with their nicknames.

What does Ouisch mean, anyways?

I found this, but running it through Google Translate seems to imply that it roughly means "Yeah".

Does anyone know exactly what it means?

We tend to forgive them because they were so young.

RuthAnn was what 14-15? She committed some crimes,

did some creepy crawling of her own. Couldn't wait to get her first PIG. But yet we forgive her. We still like her. We say we are happy that she turned her life around and became a mother to three children.

Dianne Lake never known to have commit a crime, only 14. We forgive her and still like her. Kitty was young too, 17. She never committed a crime. She was carrying Bobby's

baby so we can understand her drifting in and out.

She also is now a productive member of society.

But Clem, who committed some crimes, participated in at least one murder. He was only 17 . He went on to become a productive member of society as well. Until Brett outted him. Why do we seem to have such a hatred for Clem? How come we can't let it go, he was also just a kid. If Ruth Ann's burger did kill Dianne, would we dislike her the way we dislike Clem?

RIP Deane Morehouse 2/13/1920-5/22/2010

I received several inquiries about Deane Moorehouse, Ruth Ann's dad. I did some research and found out he passed away in May of this year. He was 90. I am pretty sure he lived his life to the fullest.
