Beach Boys Never Learn Not To Love - 1968

The Beach Boys singing "Cease To Exist".  I wonder if anyone in the Family has ever seen this.

The Beach Boys did have a hit which had a slight resemblance to a tune published six years previous:

Surfin USA

Sweet Little 16

After listening to those songs, I’ve suddenly developed a craving for pizza. Weird.

ya LIz I saw the Beach Boys live here in Duluth, MN. back in the early 80's it was all about fun , the crowd playing beachball volleyball , I mean this song how they perform it seems so morose and sad not like the BB I saw

It looks like Dennis singing, right? If so who is playing the drums?

It's funny, I was watching the Ron Regan/Manson interview last night and at one point Manson goes off on how his music is so other worldly....you know it's so unique and his approach to it is so genius and all I can think is, other than Look At Your Game Girl, his shit sucks. I was never a big fan of the Beach Boys surf stuff (Pet Sounds and Smile being the exception) but as accomplished as the BB are at arrangements and harmonies this song is a great example of how bad Mansons music is. I think the problem was Brian was burnt out and had become a recluse and since he was the source for most of the lyrics they were hard up for material. It is also significant in that this is the song they changed the words to which was sacralige because it was so brilliant as is. Please. Suze, that is Dennis singing and his brother Carl substituting bass for drums. Carl has a wonderful singing voice (listen to God Only Knows) but probably knew this song was a loser and didn't want to sing lead. As a matter of fact this is probably the first song Dennis sang lead on. If you think I sound like I don't have a lot of repect for what Manson believes is his large talent, you'd be right.

Just thinkin back on the blog about Neil Youngs connection to MANSON some dude not a regular whent on a little rant that I was supprised Charlie was tight with so many celebriaties and I fail to see the genus in Charlies music.
In my opion the only people who purchad MANSON CDs are as a novelty or people in the Charlies right catagory either way laughable

The earthquake was in 1971, and isn't that what the host is referring to in his "joke" about people in California moving all the time? So doesn't that date this taping to post-Feb.,1971? Maybe that explains why the Beachboys were so unenthusiastic about performing this song.

revatron said...

I thought it was a reference to landslides, which are common in Malibu. They emphasize it being wet in California.

Who was the host? He looked kind of like Mike Douglas.

It was either Mike Douglas or Merv Griffin. Hard to tell as we only see his face sparingly.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I actually prefer Charlie's original version to the Beach Boys version.

Matt,
I don't know why I didn't think it might be Merv. He and Mike are, easy to confuse.

Lurch, thank you for being one of the only non pussies on this blog, apart from myself. I too like charlies music a lot! Notice the little, sophmoric, fraternity mentality, on this blog. People here are more concerned with being accepted then being objective. The beach boys, neil ,young, neil diamond, buffulo springfield, guns and roses, rob zombie, maryln manson and many others have recorded charlies music. His music IS other worldly, and hauntingly beautiful as well. I am a guitar player and an inventor. I hold a patent on HEXAPHONIC GUITAR amplification.I invented the worlds first HEXAPHONIC GUITAR amplifier. And I think charles manson is one of the great song writers of the 60's. Most people on this blog, my honest opinion, their sexually inadequit, and are jealous of charlie. By the way charlie has just released a new album from the 80's, and he sounds like johnny cash on one cut. I might ad, that I contributed to the making of his album. The popularity of music has nothing to do with the quality, and like wise, some of the greatest music will never be popular, as people are conditioned to accept hype over substance. The bullshit that passes for music today, makes it apparent, that most people are dumb! Like charlie said, whoever invokes the most fear in society, their music gets the most recorded. Wa-ss up- I gots rythem man, but no melody. Iman28, are you a muslim cleric? You and william marshall should go fight it out, and leave the non semetic people out of it.
