Photo ID Help: Garretson

My dearest readers, we would like you to study the following photo and please do let us know if you think the topless, or shall I say shirtless figure on the right in the photo below is one William (Bill) Garretson, who was known as Rudi Altobelli's boytoy caretaker at 10050 Cielo Drive:

Possible Garretson Photo # 1

Now, for comparison, please inspect the authentic photo of William "Bill" Garretson when he was finally released from jail after having been the first suspect of the Tate murders. This photo is the one below. A quick Austin Ann note: the hairless chest seen in photo # 1 seems to be the same as photo # 2. Of course, I could be wrong.....

Totally, 100% authentic Garreston Photo # 2

NOTE: We are not saying it is Garretson, however we do want to hear from our readers to see what y'all think! Ya dig?

Nipple placement, navel size and slight treasure trail all look the same. The pictures are small but sure looks like him. What a great find.

Ann,

You seem to be an expert on men's physiques :):) - like to explain?

From looking at both, I think the guy in the top photo is way taller than WG. He has a longer torso - measuring from armpit to waist.LOL. Also, photo one guy has much darker hair than WG, and it is straighter. I think photo one guy has a larger chin.LOL.

Do you know who the guy on the left is in photo one?

Got to feel sorry for WG because Law Enforcement could have at least given him a pair of shoes and shirt to wear.

black_love_in_space said...

I think it IS ol' Bill G in photo #1!
Discrepancies between the two photos can easily be blamed on hunching and lighting.
Look at the shape of the navel and left nipple....

Technically, you're right. However, as Jesus said in the book of Matthew, the Lord sees all and knows all. So only he knows for sure.

MHN said...

ziggy - stop stirring! :)

Re the mystery man, I've blown them up and placed them together in one jpeg for comparison purposes, and I just don't know. If I were testifying in court I'd say I can't rule it out but nothing more positive than that.

Pros:

-curly dark hair, swept at the fringe from his left to right
-similar cupids bow, full lips, and marked dimples at corners of mouth
-sharpness of adam's apples very similar
-shoulders of similar build, and similar shadowy hollows under collarbones
-wrists slender and tapering
-shorter than male companion in each image

Cons:

-possible mole below left cheekbone of mysteryman not seen in Garretson pic, though possibly hidden behind curls
-mysteryman has two moles aligned vertically beneath his left boob, and two lower down aligned diagonally beneath his right, as well as another directly above his right nipple. None of these are visible in the garretson pic. Unless they are photographic rather than bodily blemishes...
mysteryman possibly has a fuller, deeper jawline. Garretson's seems to slant up more diagonally, though again the difference in facial expression and photographic angle makes it difficult to be sure.

I don't know. Could be....

That top pic is the gayest thing I've seen on this site since that guy saying he wanted Donald Trump's balls.

It's kinda hot. (The pic, not Trump. Btw, is the blog's US audience aware that 'trump' is slang in the UK for 'fart'? The more you know).

Matt said...

Funny, Hump. Very funny... :)

You know the second pic gives a real sense of Garretson's diminutive stature. I find it amazing the LAPD entertained the idea that he could overpower 5 people, especially Frykowski who was a big guy.

Guida Diehl said...

And I dunno, the guy in the bottom picture- his face looks different, much more weathered, and hair's curlier. But I imagine being locked up, questioned by the police, and separated from your scented honey-infused hair products could probably have a stressful impact on a man's appearance.

Mr. Humphrat said...

Yes the pics look a lot alike to me. Especially chest and belly button. Face and hair very similar, if not as curly. Also the taller man he is snuggling up with reminds me of one or both the guys, who the heck were they going into the court-I think maybe Sandy's husband and friend who had been robbed. Or was another woman's husband. How long has Hlousek been MHN?

Mr. Humphrat said...

Linda's husband

DebS said...

My two cents. The two "Garretson's" look to be about the same age in both pictures but I think that the pants in the top picture did not come into style until much later. The pants that Garretson is wearing in the lower picture are smooth and rather tight fitting, the style in the late 60s. The pants at the top are baggy and have those two pleats that became popular when khaki pants came on the scene.

To hell with the nipples, I went straight to the groin!!!!

Fiddy 8 you were 58etc etc etc right? Nice new name. Good eye on the fashion Deb. They do look a lot alike. Seems like a lack of hair curls in #1, but people can look different. Also seems like a longer torso in #1. Where was the photo found?

AustinAnn74 said...

MHN, no that is not what I was discussing with Matt. It was something about the photo. Thanks, though!

AustinAnn74 said...

Also, about the pants.....Why would the photo have to be the 60s necessarily? Couldn't the photo have been from the 70's maybe? I don't know. I really think it's him, though. That, or it's his doppelgänger. The mole, or large freckle on the upper chest area near nip is what has me doing comparisons....I keep thinking I can see that thing in both photos.

Mr. Humphrat said...

SusanB said: Re the guy on the left... Frank Zappa?
HA! That would be a first-a photo of Frank Zappa where he didn't look sarcastic :)
He looks like one of the guys back in that time my dad would be driving along and see them from behind and say "is that a girl?" and I'd be rolling my eyes. Which reminds me of the scene in Easy Rider in the restaurant where the rednecks are commenting on the longhairs that just walked in. Oh and "Turn the Page" by Bob Segar.

HellzBellz said...

NOT Zappa...NEVER , REALY I mean that....Come on MHN..Back me up here...

HellzBellz said...

But a bit more serious here...I did watch both in other programs and so...(No I am not CIA nor FBI..... LOL )and I came to the technical conclusion that Foto 1 could be a trick,Photoshop, Cut and paste..... Not on Garretson, but the other guy. And looking at te place and position of the richt nipple, because I think they are in Negative. And we all know what happens if you look to the Negative...(Manson Intervew somewhere)But annyway, the nipple is ecactly 21degrees turned from the center of an OVAL !! the both Niplles are turned around its own Center excactly the same. And actually I think it is Richard Nixon wearing a Wigg sold from Tex earlyer on...and false Beard ofcause. He was comming to tell Garretson he didnt have to go to Vietnam... or is this far fedged???

MHN said...

The guy on the left? I don't know much about Zappa to be honest, but that guy's suit is not well fitted, and his tie looks cheap. Surely a major rock star could afford a better suit than that?

I know this is supposed to be an entertaning POST, but please do this experiment:

Imagine it's August 10th 1969, and YOU are part of the newly assembled
LAPD detective team assigned to solve the TATE house Massacre case.

YOU cops ( all the mansonblog names commenting on this POST )have Garrettson in custody and have just discovered the top photo of HIM.

YOUR comments are those of the "detectives" assigned to the case.

THEN re-read ALL the comments.

NOW - what do YOU think the chances are the LAPD will actually crack the subject CASE correctly?

MHN said...

But Robert, that experiment is predicated on an LAPD detective being as irredeemably knuckle-headed as someone like equinox (for example). KIDDING equinox :)

But seriously, nobody claims the investigation was a masterpiece of police work. If you want to know how flawed it was just re-read Bugliosi's account of the struggle to get the police to show some interest in the gun. (Thankfully Bug's vanity led him to record for posterity the deficiencies of the LAPD's work in order to highlight more strikingly with his own genius.)

Matt said...

Well, shoddy police work isn't relegated to the LAPD, nor is it uncommon. They're human like the rest of us.

A few years ago a long time friend of mine thought she was helping a friend by renting a van for him. What she didn't know was that he used it to transport the body of his wife (yes, he offed her) to a local lake to hide.

The Raleigh police knew she was a friend of the killer (as was I) and included her in the investigation - to the point of a search warrant of her home. At this point she had no idea that Robert was guilty. The receipt for the van rental was in plane sight on her kitchen table because she had no idea it was evidence.

The police executed the warrant, tore her place apart and not one of them looked at the receipt. Police work reminiscent of the LAPD of 1969 (or LASO for that matter).

HellzBellz said...

Wow Matt, quite a story, gives one to think indeed.

@ MHN.... reacting your comment I think well become quite an investigators team..Technicly I mean...LOL !!!

@ Robert Hendrickson, When reading this post I saw 2photos, and was asked as a reader what I thought ? ? I just gave my opinion on that...The rest is just bulshitting around a bit. Sometimes the Serious Mode is somewhat lower ....

Matt said...

Well Ann, not too many people think this looks as gay as you & I do.

AstroCreep said...

I think the top pic looks incredibly loving and gay... However, not knowing the context of the photo it makes it hard for me to say that conclusively. Men don't generally get that close with shirts off in a casual setting. Also, I have no issues with homosexuality. Its's just not my personal cup of tea.

In regards to the police work and Bugliosi, I'm almost complete with the audio book "Restless Souls" and it paints Bugliosi as being somewhat in the dark asking/BEGGING the police for more information and evidence. Did the police investigate like incompetent boobs? Yes I think they did. It seems like PJ Tate's investigation uncovered about as many clues as the LAPD.

Matt: "not too many people think this looks as gay as you & I do."

Are you kidding? I thought it had gay overtones so blatant it literally went without saying. It's like, nobody commented that both guys had hair, because obviously both guys had hair.

Equinox: lapsing is the best thing about Catholicism isn't it? It's like someone says in Woody Allen's 'Love and Death' - "I never want to marry. I only want to get divorced."

Robert Hendrickson said...

Not only does the top photo scream of "gay pride," BUT because the bearded guy is a dead ringer for JC, I thought the very idea of the poster was to transform Jesus bashing into a new and improved wave of Helter Skelter.

Believe it or not Matt, I can beat YOU on the "receipt" issue. An LAPD officer put a "parking ticket" on the windshield of a can parked across the street from my bother-in-law's house in Hollywood. The driver was still sitting up in the driver's seat - with a bullet HOLE in HIS head.

Actually, you could "fairly" say that because the LAPD never even contacted ME, after Merrick was murdered, maybe the ONLY way you could PASS the TEST to become a detective was to FAIL it.

BUT it's kinda like the President trying to sell a DEAL with the Iranians NOT to develop a nuclear bomb. Hey, "shit for brains" THEY had an atomic bomb years ago.

Wow thts realy wors case of stupidness yes... But this was only 1 officer who was at the Rank of ,,Parking Tickets,, its the next one story you write, wich I think is more to worrie,...
Maybe shows that system is/was failing everywhere in USA. But I cannot judge on that fromout Europe where we only have acces to this Info since the Internet... But throughout the years I learned some of the American ways...(you must remember the Robert Dwyer suicide, and most important the story behind this) Owh.....and shit happens all around the world nowadays. it always has.But we now know it faster, more detailed, researcheable....

Good old LAPD - where would we be without them.

When Merrick was murdered - did you not consider going along voluntarily to see if you could help. Or was that a case of not putting your head in the lion's mouth unless you have to?

Robert Hendrickson said...

Great question EQ: When I saw Bugliosi on the nightly news walking with Merrick's wife at the funeral, I thought maybe this is the time to NOT go looking for trouble.

AND when Leo Rivers, Merrick's right hand man, told me they had dropped the case after interviewing 60 people (and most all said they were glad he was dead) I knew the matter was NOT something I needed in my life. His last words to me were: "May we never meet again." AND I drove away with a truck loaded with all my film.

TODAY, if questioned by a new breed of cops, I would probably respond with "Try looking in your own backyard. There you will find motive and opportunity."

AustinAnn74 said...

Equinox, honey, I am lucky if I get any kind of posting out, much less an anniversary one. :-) To be perfectly honest, I didn't even realize that it was the 46 anniversary, until yesterday. By then, it was too late. Oh, BTW, cats grooming dogs is nothing new in my household. I don't know about the other parts of Texas, but in Austin, anything goes!!! As we like to say here, "Keep Austin Weird!"

Robert Hendrickson said...

Mr. Bellz, you're raised an interesting issue - the value of the World-Wide internet, especially where the "establishment" has a "message" to broadcast.

This week, here in LA, it is the 50th anniversary of the infamous Watts Riots (a REAL Helter Skelter) AND most all older folks are saying "Nothing has changed."

BUT of course, and NOTHING will ever change for the BLACK people, until another "minority" takes THEIR place.

AND until then, the "establishment" will continue to spend millions of dollars in advertising (settling lawsuits)for KILLING blacks.

Cause it's much cheaper to pay off the surviving family members, than to pay for TV time to get the "message" accross. AND the message is very clear. "Blacks, Browns, and White trash - stay in your cages OR the Zoo keepers are here, there and everywhere - so BEWARE !

I'm even beginning to realize that the Nazi SS may have actually developed this process purpose at the expense of the Jewish people. AND it worked !

THEY obviously got the "message" out !

OFF TOPIC

There was a recent thread on Steve McQueen where we discussed Jay Sebring. I should probably get my eyes checked, because these guys (or gays?) don't look alike to me.

The first dude's face reminds me a bit of Brad Davis as Billy Hayes in Midnight Express, especially at the start of the movie when his hair was longer. He also has higher, more rounded cheekbones. Garretson had lower cheekbones and a flat, wide face. From what I've seen of Garretson, his facial features were similar to Lars Ulrich (Metallica drummer and major douchebag).

Robert Hendrickson said...

Bellz, Ziggy, EG: Your questions are great AND first I have to say "Midnight Express" goes way beyond traditional filmmaking.
I just saw it again a month ago and realized that when Brad physically "destroys" the villian of the play, but NOT the nasty guard, the same "rage" was likely present on August 9, 1969.

Merrick was a character probaby like none that YOU have ever personally known. He was a pathalogical LIAR and an out and out THIEF. AND he actually enjoyed causing people harm, especially those who rejected HIM.

That HE and Bugliosi immediately became buddies may have been partly because Vince was immediately dazed by Joan (Merrick's wife).

I'm sure there is a relevant story here, and I have personnaly witnessed some of Merrick's hurtful ways, that even included humiliating HIS own son in front of us.

To my knowledge, I am the only one that found REAL justice in dealing with him, except maybe for the person who killed him.

As I understand it, it was a year or so after he was murdered that one day some guy just walked into the police station and proclaimed HE killed Merrick. Case closed - how conveinient, but for the FACT that Ronnie Howard was also murdered a year later, I cannot forget the timing.

AND Ronnie had spilled everything to Merrick and most likely Joan knows the TRUTH also.

She has been in hiding for seems like forever, BUT maintained a friendship with Vince.

IF you are reading this Joan, maybe it's time to reveal. Don't worry, the cops are probably dribbling on one another in some rest home by now.

The man in the top photo is not Bill Garretson. He is taller and has a much longer torso. There are some color photos taken of Bill at Cielo Drive inside the guest house, by the pool, and in front of the main house by the covered wishing well. You can find on the Internet. I'm guessing they were taken by the property owner, the late Rudi Altobelli, a middle aged gay man 19 year old Garretson was living with in the guest house. I wonder if Rudi took any shirtless pics of Bill that have not been published?

I think Garreston was a looker in his day 😉

Bill was definitely a handsome man. He sure looked good shirtless. A smooth buff body with just a treasure trail of hair below the belly button. He was not a big guy but was reportedly "very well endowed". I bet Mr. Altobelli was a happy camper. I'd want Bill to move in with me also.
