Manson Family High Schools Master List - Community Request Post

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!

Shoe's recent work motivated me to attempt to group the folks from the Manson arrests together and look for patterns and commonalities within the created groups. I've wondered if Paul Watkins was fibbing about Charles Manson sending him back to high school to procure young loves ever since I read Watkins' book on the Col's site during the halcyon days of my early Manson research. Let's start there.

Hey, man,” Charlie said after a long silence. “Speaking of young love, how about you hustling some new blood? You know, maybe enroll in that high school. I see some fine-looking girls walking to school in the morning. Can you dig that?”

“Sure, why not… maybe I can get my diploma!”

Charlie chuckled. “Yeah… get educated… study the mystery of history, and the ramis-jamis… and in the meantime, we’ll call it the in-between time. Then, on the other hand, of course, you have a ring.” Charlie looked down at his left hand, the middle finger of which sported a turquoise ring. “Now,” he went on, “take the toad’s toenail… pretty ain’t it – bleep, bleep – ride in a jeep.”

And then..

It was two o’clock by the time we got back to the house. I had Stephanie draw me a bath, then I changed clothes and drove the BSA bike I’d just acquired down to Birmingham High to enroll.

The wrap up...

By then my stint as a student at Birmingham High had come to an end. After two weeks of classes, I’d gotten bored, but not before luring several attractive girls to Gresham Street to get loaded and make love. While none of these girls ever joined the Family, my success pleased Charlie.

“Motherfucker! Those little gals love your ass!”

* I don't necessarily believe Lil Paul remembered conversations word for word. Or even at all.

When I wrote about Patricia Krenwinkel a couple of months back, we touched on today's cultural focus on stopping the sex trafficking of minors and discussed how our modern opinions influence parole hearings for crimes that took place over half a century ago.

If I could somehow disengage from my generalized misanthropy, inability to suffer fools, germs thing, unwillingness to engage in or witness human contact, love of central air, dislike of discomfort and inconvenience, aversion to desert dumpsters, sleeping on the ground, viruses, and (of course) the murders, I can totally see myself enjoying machine guns, dune buggy races, and nonstop Tommy Chong-sized 1969 joints beside a campfire while assuring Mary Brunner that Wisconsin football will always take a back seat to the mighty Buckeyes.

EJB could fill us in on the teams in the MAC. I'd say, "Yeller, put yer glasses on. That rule really ain't a rule. And your conference is junior varsity." But only if Bill wasn't around. I do my best to avoid fights with boxing champions.

I'd wager Charlie was skilled at thumping bigger dudes. If the no eyeglasses rule really was a rule, maybe I could bribe the boss with a crow or some other desert animal I summoned via my magical powers and a triangle I stole from the Chatsworth High band room. How am I supposed to read my books without my spectacles, Charlie?

Picture me rollin. Tokyo drifting across that hot sand with Brenda McCann in a bikini top beside me in the passenger seat. She's a minor. I'm a minor. We're all freakin minors with dune buggies and it's so hot outside. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you as always for tuning in to your forever honest journalist, Goodness Gracias Greene-Whyte, reporting from out back behind old George's movie ranch.

Before I go ranking my favorite Manson girls and choosing a mattress that smells like cat urine, I have to know if anyone was exploiting minors. If yes, I want to know how that particular machine worked. Where did the minors come from and who reeled them in?

If I turn to the Internet for answers, it's super easy to find someone saying, "Oh, they were a cult yackity yackity and all day was spent recruiting." That gem is uttered to death.

Searching to verify, I'll sometimes ask others to ask this or that person from the family if they were part of a cult and spent all day recruiting. Without fail, the people always come back repeating things like, "No way. We met up in the morning for chores and then broke off into groups or alone to do whatever we wanted all day."

But if I return here with that info and present a front row view from 1969, multiple views from front row 1969 even, some readers will scoff. "Whatever. They're a pack of g-damn liars who should burn in Hell."

Oh, how the venom drips. Who am I left to believe? Someone who lived it, or someone on the Internet who acts like they know things?

Rhetorical. The answer is obviously the Internet. Here's a short list of things I think we can believe without a ton of debate:

- We have public records proving Charlie was a pimp in his younger days

- Lynette Fromme mentions herself, Katie, and Brenda turning tricks out of Pete DiLeo's house

- Prostitution has been with us longer than written language

Let's take that list, the Manson mugs, sundry others caught with the Slippies, and build a shrine upon Mt. Data. I want to make a spreadsheet of their high schools and see if any rhyme or reason pivots out.

See what I did there? I know. Writer jokes are corny but they're all I have.

On with the show. I'm posting the mugs again below so no one has to scroll. Let's add as we go. Again, please feel free to correct. The people who steal this work and present it without credit to their cliques will appreciate you but not like I do. My love is real.

Buntline got us started and I added what I know. Homie is en fuego.

Hmmmm, Washington High School, Portland, OR (PDX).

This HS was decommissioned a long time ago, it was of the old east-coast type brick multistory type, and was quite impressive. It still stands today and is used for community theater.

There first property we bought in PDX in 1987 was about two blocks away. We lived in one of the units for four years.

Also lived directly across the street from San Pedro high, in late 86 - mid 87, just before we moved to PDX.

GW:

Interesting (to me, anyway) aside...

All of the segments taken from the book--the stuff in the blue background--reads to me as having been written by a professional writer, targeting popular consumption.

In truth, it reads like the bad dialogue I wrote for an Indonesian film in the late 80s. (There's a story behind this, but it's trivial...)

As a professional writer, does the material seem petty transparently constructed, with the intent to simply Manson's character into an easy-to-recognize "villain"? It has Manson as playing to type, as the public has come to understand him after all of the media coverage over the years.

My own interpretation of Manson, after viewing interviews, reading his comments in the TLB (often out of hearing of the jury, before the bench), reading what people like Jakobson said about him, lead me to believe he was far from a simple lech. He was essentially seeing that he had a lot of power, but it was within certain constraints, and he was attempting to "feel" his way thru exploiting and enhancing this power, since it was the first time in his life he'd had anything like this.

So, yep, I think he realized that he could basically talk the pants off of certain kinds of women, that there was a group of such too young for him to readily meet, and that if he had people like Beausoleil meet them and bring them back, he could sell most of them into joining the Family--and he could then use them in many ways.

I mean, simply dicking them was probably the least of his goals.

I don't know; to me the stuff in the blue lozenges seems almost insultingly manipulative.

Wow! I was at San Diego State fall '68 thru spring '71. Small world!

I lived in La Mesa, then University Park, then Spring Valley before it was developed, when there were still lots of small avocado groves.

Going thru college, I also worked fulltime the whole time, and I did everything (gardener, bank courier, janitor, door security at "That Place Across the Street from the Sports Area", gas stations, kennel assistant, etc.), and was all over.

On my own time, I liked Black's Beach, OB, Mission Beach. Actually got married (1st time) on Coronado Island, a tiny civil ceremony.

This is the only forum where I encounter little nostalgic zingers like that.

Shoe, you nailed it. Although I also definitely felt like I was peeking behind the curtain the first time I read it. Watkins' daughter is an author but I've never read her.

When I read that stuff with 2022 eyes, I'm asking myself like were we really culturally that naive? Even like Paul Crockett saying oh yeah I was deprogramming the boys and Charlie thought I'd put a magic spell around the property and refused to come up there. America was like oh wow far out.

Imagine today tho. We'd be like you deprogrammed them in a minor's residence? Where did you go to school? Where did you work? How do you get to call yourself a deprogrammer? Etc.

G. Greene-Whyte said...

Simi Valley High School is emerging as a winner in the recruitment sweepstakes. My guess is Clem ran that show but we're still digging thru the layers of minutia.

The campus is just 3.5 miles away from the former 12000 Santa Susana Pass Rd. Most of the trip is spent on the Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway, although I wonder if the locals called it the 118 back in the day. I've never had an In-N-Out burger but there's one near the decommissioned high school if you take the drive.

shoegazer said...

GW:

Not sure exactly where we're talking about, but much of 118 was not there in the mid 60s. They would have used Topanga Canyon Blvd north and south, and probably Devonshire east/west.. There was a road thru the pass, but I doubt it was 118.

This was not an area I was familiar with, however.

BTW, as far as how locals tended to refer to freeways, from what I recall, in most, maybe even all parts of LA, the freeways at first were referred to by their names, rather than their numbers. E.g., 101 was the Hollywood freeway, 405 was the San Diego freeway, 10 was the Santa Monica freeway. 5 was the Golden State, etc. There was the Harbor Freeway which I drove on to go to work everyday, and damned if I know the number.

It was this way for a long time.

This changed in the 70s/80s away from the descriptive names to the route numbers. Not sure why. I suspect that as new freeways went in to places most people didn't know, E.g., Garden Grove, as in Garden Grove Freeway, WTF knows where Garden Grove is, so I think around that time was when it shifted to the route number.

TabOrFresca said...

@ Buntline,

When “Scab” posted the mugshots matrix years ago, there were a number of questions as to who were some of these faces and names … and how are they connected to Manson?

Allen Delisle was different than a few of the other mysterious names in that there was a newspaper article that listed a
“Allen Lee Delsle” as being arrested for suspicion of possession of marijuana in the same article that described the 8/16/69 Spahn Raid. But to complicate things, he is not listed on the booking sheet list for that raid. So it has been a puzzle as to was this a real name or alias and why is he listed in the article and was he booked separately or let go. Not to mention, “How did ‘Scab’ know about Allen, Jack, Ruth, Carol, Tom, etc. … and obtain the mugshots?

Finding another source for the existence of “Allen Lee Delisle” is interesting. If there is a picture, does it resemble the mug?

Jenn said...

There has been a route 118 for a very long time, but it wasn’t a freeway until quite a bit after the Manson period, if memory serves. The Harbor Freeway is the 110.

I don't think that's possible.

Delisle was sentenced to life imprisonment, after a three week trial, on 10/31/1970, for the murder of Duncan Stewart. Russell and Plumlee were apprehended 10/12/1970.

As I commented on this Blog-Post before

I graduated Chatsworth High School in June of 1968. I am going to look at my Chatsworth High School yearbooks and see if I can match-up the face of Ruth Gordon
⬇️
https://www.charlesmanson.com/family-members/ruth-gordon/

I definitely know the
Chatsworth/Simi Valley/Santa Susana Pass area very well. I played in several Rock Bands that performed off & on in several Rock clubs in Simi from February of 1972 thru August of 1974.
My favorite place was called The Rock Bottom
(appropriately named).
What a "wild-place" that was.
It was located in the Santa Susana Pass on the Simi Valley side.
It was owned by a man named Leon.
Once last call was called at 1:30am, the party spilled out to the parking lot, and Leon would be selling drinks in the parking lot
(Crazy Times).

Anyway, I've been very busy on my Twitter account. Especially with the Amber Heard & Johnny Depp feud. I am in possession of an audio tape that was made by someone tape recording Johnny Depp's head of security/head bouncer Big Ed Shaw at The Viper Room. The most telling/chilling part of the tape is Big Ed Shaw confirming that the death of River Phoenix was murder.
And the cover-up?
Unreal.

And to Green-White and others. Keep-up the excellent Blog-Posts and comments.

Also, a thought. In this Blog-Post, it is mentioned that Paul Watkins went to Birmingham High School to procure young girls. I'm thinking to myself, I just wonder if he or someone else in the Charles Manson family went to Chatsworth High School to procure young girls.
I belong to the Chatsworth High School "Class Creator 1968" website. There are a few people that I dialogue with there. I will ask them if they can ever remember seeing Paul Watkins
(I'll show them a photo of Watkins)
at Chatsworth High School.
It's a long-shot but who knows.
Also, I'll show them a photo of Barbara Cline.

Starviego,

I don't think that's possible.

Delisle was sentenced to life imprisonment, after a three week trial, on 10/31/1970, for the murder of Duncan Stewart. Russell and Plumlee were apprehended 10/12/1970.

------------------

Well that rules out Russell and Delisle as being the same person. So is it just coincidence that these two Manson associates are both involved in violent attacks involving home invasions, and that they had an uncanny resemblance? It's mind mind-boggling.

Not many from this collection of mugshots (or, from Deemers List) that we haven't found something about. Most of the folks listed/photographed between the two reports have provided us quite a fair bit of Intel.

There are definitely clusters of people who went to school with other MF members and associates and, often sharing the same graduation classes (if they graduated).

Maybe there was activer ecruitment in schools, word-of-mouth or, perhaps attempts to recruit kids on horseback riding treks...

You never really know with the kooky Manson Family

Stay tuned.
