Polanski blames the Pill for 'masculinising' women

CANNES, France — Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski on Saturday blamed birth control pills for "masculinising" women, as he premiered what he called a satire on sexism.

Polanski unveiled "Venus in Fur" starring his wife Emmanuelle Seigner, which was the last movie in competition to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Asked by a reporter how his views of women had changed over time, the filmmaker said he thought feminism and advances in contraception had blurred the distinctions between the sexes.

"I think that now offering flowers to a lady becomes indecent, that's how I feel about it," he told a news conference after a well-received screening of his film.

"I think to level the genders -- it's purely idiotic. I think it's a result... of progress in medicine. I think that the Pill has changed greatly the woman of our times, 'masculinising' her -- how would you say it?" he said, looking to his cast for a prompt.

He added: "I think that it chases away the romance from our lives and that's a great pity."
Polanski's latest film captures the friction between a theatre director and an actress which plays out as a battle of the sexes.

"It's the aspect of the sexism and the satire on sexism which was very seductive in this film. There's this macho element in his character which is really coming to pieces and that was quite enjoyable," Polanski told reporters, referring to the male character.

"Whatever people think and know about me, the ones that do know about me know that I am not this way," he said with a smile for Seigner.

Polanski won an Academy Award in 2003 for his Holocaust drama "The Pianist" but did not pick up the prize in the United States, where he faces an outstanding arrest warrant for sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

The festival this year featured a number of controversial comments about women.

French director Francois Ozon, who presented a film called "Young and Beautiful" about a 17-year-old middle-class prostitute, told trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter that lots of women dreamt of selling sex.

"I think women can really be connected with this girl because it's a fantasy of many women to do prostitution," he said.

When challenged by the interviewer, he insisted: "It is the reality. You speak with many women, you speak with shrinks, everybody knows that. Well, maybe not Americans."

Ozon later dismissed uproar over the remarks, saying he was only referring to women in his film.

In case I haven't made myself clear on this Bozo...

Ahh ya know what- just let him keep making statements like this.

says more about him than I ever could.

Every time he makes a decent movie they put microphones in front of him and he reminds the world who he really is. A shallow, self absorbed, small man who is more dangerous than any of the characters he has created and no less dangerous than Charlie- the man whose name he will be attached to forever...

( OK- so I did say one thing about him lol sorry, I just cant help myself sometimes)

No less dangerous than Charlie?

St. Circumstance said...

Not really. I dont think Charlie had it in him to kill anyone personally except in Self preservation. Crowe was much bigger than Charlie and I think for the most part that was his only attempt at killing anyone himself...

I bet Roman would act the same if he found himself in a similar situation. He has shown over and over his willingness to put his own self preservation ahead of any other interests....

Maybe that is a reach or speculation...

O.K. But you take Crowe out of the equation and Romans crimes are very similar to Charlies.

They have both shown repeated interest in underage girls and have both used drugs and intimidation to get them. they both have used flight as a means of avoiding responsibilities for there crimes. they both laugh at the law and make mockery of those who try to make them pay for their indiscretions...

bottom line to me is this...

If I had a 14 or 15 year old girl I would not feel the slightest bit easier knowing she was alone with Roman Polanski than I would if she were alone with Manson. I don't think either would necessarily kill her, but feel both are just as likely to try and take advantage of her...

so to me that makes Roman no less dangerous than Manson

to me :)

Roman has an interesting view of human sexuality. All men want to have sex with young girls and all women fantasize about being prostitutes. Project we much?

There is no way Sharon would have been able to stay married to this POS once she had enough maturity and perspective to see him for what he is. At least I would like to think so.

May I also say that Polanski's anti-americanism makes me proud to be an American. Screw you and happy Memorial Day you twisted little pervert.

That was real class on display at Cannes, Perv-inski. When did you become Edie Williams? Maybe you can get your wife to go commando next year. That ought to get you another 2 seconds of press attention.

That toad should probably refrain from ever mentioning females and pharmaceuticals in the same sentence.

Matt just wondering if you guys had to make special arrangements to go to Cielo drive ? I remember a fairly recent video on YouTube the guy who posted it said he got permission from police before he did a walking tour up to gate of the mansion that now stands where Sharon's house was
Also remember something from 6 Degrees of Helter Skelter that he said he knew someone who lived on the street that's how they went without any problem

If you will recall from his rape trial, Pervinski's first line of defense against unwanted pregnancy is the rhythm method. He has his own "Plan B" should he be unable to pinpoint the time of the last menstrual cycle...

And someone please tell Pervinski that "The Pill" isnt a piece of a qualuude broken off from one of your stash.

Didn't Charlie participate in murdering Mr. Shea? Also, he shot Crowe. He most definitely had it in him to kill people. Of course, that is just my opinion of the dude. Maybe I am wrong.

St. Circumstance said...

Ann did he really have it in him to kill people??

He was a class A scumbag- he was much more capable than Roman of petty crime and being an every day thief.

But was Charlie more dangerous?

maybe. He was arrested many many times. but he did the same things over and over and even Bugs said he was surprised at how little violent crime was in his background...

I think the very worst of his nature contained a pedophile. And the very Worst of Romans contained the same.

I think if Charlie himself had the backbone for murder- many many more would be dead...

I think he was a chicken shit punk at his core. He had others do the tough things he was too scared to do himself. I granted you Crowe as the exception. BUT- He was backed into a corner with Crowe, and maybe I am wrong but he was sort of in a position of self defense. Even so- he used a gun himself not a knife when he had to get dirty himself. It is much quicker and easier to attack someone like that. It takes a much thicker skin and more of a stomach to put in a knife and slowly kill- when you can hear the sounds and smell the smells of a dying person who is going slowly.

I think it takes a certain kind of animal to do that and Charlie had many chances to prove he was that type of animal and it always fell to others. Even before he had a " family" of followers and he lived the worst of lives- he wasn't killing people...

This is why I think calling him the the Most Evil Man alive is over rating him...

Tex- I would listen to that argument.

not Charlie though.

If I had an attractive young daughter who was a teenager- If she were at Spahn Ranch with Charlie or Jack Nicholson house with Roman- personally- I would be worried about the exact same thing happening to her....

drugs and sex with people twice her age...

but that - again- is just my opinion.

I like all these opinions and yours too Ann :)

Well this is a rude wakening from a near perfect weekend in the Sierras.

Roman has said and done some pretty disgusting stuff so Patty is surprised at how grossed out she is by his latest overshare.

PS: Patty has always meant to mention that "Repulsion" sucks ass.

I had hoped Polanski's opinions on women had changed when he was raising a daughter. I am disappointed. I wondered what he was thinking about his daughters sex life when she was thirteen, hoping he'd really figure out how horribly he'd treated Samantha geimer at that age, but he's still a turd he didn't learn a thing.
