Yall ever heard of this place? It was in the pile of photographs I restored this past summer. It was marked with the LaBianca case number. If I've ever heard about this place, I've long forgotten about it. I'm trying to figure out it relevance to the LaBianca case. I'm assuming Spahn Ranch probably got stuff from here. Just a guess. Perhaps someone can identify where this place was located because I don't think it still exists.

If anyone knows the significance of "Chatsworth Equipment Rentals", please let us know...

The "Strip Cult" Rock Musical....

In May of 2008- Director Mike Z brought a show to the Parish Room in Austin Texas. He offered the following description:

Update on Sandy

Hi Liz,

I'm finally getting back to you regarding Sandy.  Apparently she does keep in contact with Manson. 

This last week he received a letter from her & she as well sent him $600.

I was told she's no longer with George XXX & her return address was in Florida.... He couldn't remember what city or town.

He also said she's the only one from the originals that keeps in touch.

Heat Waves: Reflections on the Desert, Part II

All this talk of another Eviliz Tour has got Patty's mojo ticklin at her to finish her reflections on tour version 1.0.

In Little Paul's book (which you can read over at The Colonel's pad), he describes some of the landscape on the way up Goler Wash as looking like mounds of "melting ice cream":

Patty thinks he must have meant this spot. To her, they also look like reclining, nude bodies that Charlie himself might have choreographed. Geologically speaking, this spot is one where four different systems collide in the same place! It's otherworldly, and a good example of how the desert can trip you out just by virtue of being in it. On acid? I don't know for sure, but all Patty can imagine is, "holy crap!"

Speaking of "holy crap!" That is what Patty had said out loud when she saw The Grump from Pahrump's book collection. Check it out:

And he was an amazing host. But, Patty digresses: back to the desert. Death Valley is usually beyond dry. But when it gets wet, the water shoots right over and through it, and VIOLENTLY. In some parts of Goler Wash, you can really graphically see the scale of how and where this happens:

So, if Sergeant Dostie says that there's eight feel of dirt over some bodies at the top of the wash, and another 40 feet over some more bodies at the bottom of it, then as a matter of fact YES, Patty DOES believe him.

And speaing of bodies, here's a shot midway up the foot path beween Barker's and Myers' ranches. This is a spot where yet another body is supposed to be: a girl who "got homesick" is said to have been slain here. The image gives a good perspective on how close the two ranches really are: next door neighbors of a sort.

The next closest neighbor is Newman's, which is about a mile down the wash from Barker's. Newman's Cabin is what the Family called the "Halfway House." Patty was more than a little surprised to see his business card still there, because it's amazing that no one has swiped it yet. Don't get any ideas, either. And if you call the number on the card, you have to tell Patty about who answered and what they said, okay? Come on now, pinkie promise.

Well, that's all she's got for now. Nice to see y'all, it's been a while. Let's not go much longer than, say, April 2013 before we do it again, okay?

Satan's Slaves and the Straight Satans

In doing a little research on both the Satan's Slaves and the Straight Satans I learned that they were two different motorcycle clubs.  Both are said to have been 1%er clubs.  The term 1% comes from the idea that 99% of motorcycle riders are law abiding citizens and the remaining 1% are outlaws.

Informally, in the 1950's, there was an agreement among the 1%ers to agree to certain guidelines, regardless of club affiliation, concerning stealing from one another, rat-packing, etc. and to be committed to biking and brotherhood not as a weekend activity but as a way of life.  The Hells Angels originally went along with this but soon decided that they were committed to no one except their fellow Hells Angels.  This put them in a class by themselves leaving the remainder of the outlaw motorcycle clubs to be known as the 1%ers.

I was able to find mid '60's articles on the Satan's Slaves which legitimizes them as true 1%ers, using the same logo over the years until they patched over with the Hells Angels.

Bugliosi in Helter Skelter does not mention the Satan's Slaves but there is plenty on the Straight Satans.  Both Al Springer and Danny DeCarlo reportedly gave evidence of the Family's involvement with many murders attributed to the Family.  Generally there is a code of silence among the 1%ers but some members of the Straight Satans were like babbling brooks.  The March 13-19, 1970 article that appeared in the Los Angeles Free Press has me wondering how legitimate the Straight Satans were as a 1%er club.

I was able to find an article saying that one Straight Satan, Robert Driscoll, was charged with murdering a fellow who was impersonating a Straight Satan in June 1971.  Apparently 10 people were originally arrested but by the end of 10 days only one person was charged.  I could not find anything further on the arrest, a trial or a conviction.  The person murdered is listed in the California Death Index.  After that there are no more articles on the Straight Satans.  This article struck me as a little odd considering the LA Free Press article on people impersonating the Straight Satans.

"A one chapter hard core outfit. Some called them a club. Others called them a gang. A big part of the history of the 1%er. 'Any thing you heard about them is likely true.', one of their ole ladies told my ole man.

"Selling my ole man's collection. He was injured by a violent act but is recovering."

On Susan Murphy: From Candy and Nuts

what has happened to her - in photos she was definitely following RED and BLUE-I know once she got to terminal island prison she hit a guard and tried to escape after this Red wrote some statement that Susan Heather Murphy wasn't Manson family as they don't want violence ( hello?) Ive included some pics of her-wonders did they give her the name Heather? did she wear red robe or have her own color? I'm sure she knows a lot of RED and BLUe be interesting for her thoughts Also the link with PAtty Hearst she spent time in prison with REd and BLue and wrote about them in her autobiography also in Taming of the Beast Charlie asks RED on the phone about Patty HEarst would be interesting topic

Book: The White Album - by Joan Didion

The White Album is an autobiographical literary essay detailing loosely related events in the author's life in the 1960s, primarily in Los Angeles. In the course of describing her ongoing psychological difficulties, Didion discusses Black Panther Party meetings, drug-related experiences, a Doors recording session, various other interactions with LA musicians and cultural figures.

Didion also discisses several prison meetings with Linda Kasabian, who at the time was testifying against Manson, Krenwinkel, Atkins and Van Houten for the TLB murders. Apparently, Sharon had been an acquaintance of Didion's. The murder trial cast a cloud of fear over Hollywood that seemed to propel many of Didion's insights. The impression conveyed is one of a city and nation pervaded by paranoia and detachment.

The TLB Kill Zone

Have you ever seen a map like this of a "kill zone"? Today it's one of the "first" things an FBI profiler would create.

On one side is Cielo, on the other is Waverly. Connect the outer 4 points of the cross and you will have the "kill zone" or claimed turf. There right in the middle is the Laural Canyon "actors / musicians colony".

The "Actors" panicked out when TLB happened. Drugs were already heavy in the colony, so when the musicians moved in it only increased.

Bruce Davis Decision - Is The Tide Turning?

                                                           
I read an interesting piece the other day which made me wonder again about Bruce. Does he possibly know more, and could he really get out and away without talking about it? A few years ago I never would have given a minutes credence to the idea of him walking free. But, lately I am hearing more and more opinions and ideas which are making me start to wonder just a bit. Even Conservatives are starting to suggest that it could be conceivable that MR. Bruce Davis is getting closer to going home. The following is an article I read by Debra Saunders who is a conservative columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. Syndicated by Creators Syndicate, her thrice weekly column is also carried by newspapers throughout the country and on townhall.com. I didn't include all the links in her piece but the relevant one about the Governors record is at the bottom....

Odds are Manson killer Bruce Davis goes free

                                                  

“A parole board panel has recommended the release of a former Charles Manson follower imprisoned for 40 years for a double murder Manson engineered, but it’s not the last hurdle Bruce Davis will face as he seeks his freedom,” the Associated Press reported.  

But this is how the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced what happened:

San Luis Obispo — “ The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) issued a grant of parole today for convicted killer and former Charles Manson associate Bruce Davis, 69, during a parole consideration hearing at California Men’s Colony. Today’s decision was the result of Davis’ 27th parole suitability hearing.  Davis was not convicted in the infamous 1969 Sharon Tate or LaBianca killings. His conviction was for the 1969 first-degree robbery/murders of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald “Shorty” Shea. Steve Grogan also was convicted for those crimes. In 2010 the parole board also recommended parole for Davis in January 2010, but Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reversed the ruling. Gov. Jerry Brown has 120 days to do likewise, or not.

Spokesman Gil Duran declined comment when asked by the Associated Press. If Duran responds to my email, I shall post an update. Michael Rushford of the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation told me he thinks Davis should die in prison, but “I think he’s going to get out. I think Jerry’s going to let him out.” As he wrote here, Rushford believes that Brown has returned to the sort of anti-law enforcement views that led him to appoint Rose Bird as California Chief Justice during his first stint as governor. Rushford cited a Sacramento Bee story that found Brown let stand roughly 82 percent of the board’s decisions to parole convicted killers last year. By comparison, Schwarzenegger let stand 27 percent of such cases, while Gray Davis affirmed two percent of parole grants for murderers.

I wonder how this decision will affect how Californians vote on Proposition 34, the ballot measure to end the state’s capital-punishment law.
